The Art of Telling Stories Requires the Right Gear
Building a filmmaking kit means a lot of small decisions that add up fast. We've helped filmmakers at every level make these calls, from first documentary to full studio setup. Let's help you choose gear that fits the story you're telling.
Filmmaking Camera Kits
Room to Grow
Choose your system, then build from there. Each kit covers the essentials to get started, with room to add and upgrade as your budget and skills grow.
Lighting for Video
The right light should disappear into your shoot, not fight it. That means quiet operation your mic won't pick up, battery life that lasts through a full interview or location day, and a form factor light enough to pack and carry solo.
The amaran lineup covers this ground for most filmmakers — reliable output, Bowens-mount compatibility, and pricing that lets you build a full three-point setup without blowing the budget.
For productions that need more power or truer colour, Aputure's STORM series steps up with BLAIR light engine technology for accurate, natural-looking colour even at low dimming levels. We also keep fresnels, spotlight kits, and modifiers in stock to support what you need.

Audio for Video

Choosing the Right Mic
Great footage with bad audio still feels unwatchable — so this is worth getting right. Shotgun mics are your go-to for run-and-gun and talking-head shots where the mic can stay just out of frame. Lavs disappear on-body for interviews and sit-down conversations.
Polar Patterns, Simplified
Polar pattern matters more than people think. Cardioid and supercardioid patterns reject room noise and side chatter — exactly what you want in an untreated space or a busy location. Shooting outdoors or somewhere windy? A foam or furry windscreen cuts wind noise and handling rumble before it ever hits your track, and it's one of the cheapest upgrades that makes the biggest difference.
Recording Better Audio
Want a safety net for unpredictable audio? Look for 32-bit float. It captures extreme volume swings without clipping, so a sudden shout or a quiet whisper are both recoverable in post — no more riding gain levels mid-shoot. Some wireless mic systems now record 32-bit float right onto the transmitter, so you can send audio straight to your camera and still have a backup if something goes wrong.
Prefer a dedicated recorder? That's still the better choice for multi-mic setups or fully independent backups. However you record it, sync your external audio to video with a clap, a slate, or timecode — most editing software handles the rest automatically.

Camera Support

A steady shot is often the difference between amateur and professional-looking footage. Tripods are your foundation for interviews and static shots — look for fluid heads if you're panning or tilting during a take. Gimbals stabilize handheld movement for walk-and-talks, establishing shots, or anywhere you need to move with your subject, while sliders add smooth, controlled motion to otherwise static scenes.
Building a more advanced rig? Cages give you mounting points for monitors, mics, and lights, while follow focus systems and control knobs let you pull sharp, repeatable focus by hand — essential once you're shooting with manual lenses or want cinematic focus pulls instead of relying on autofocus. And one small upgrade that pays off fast: a quick-release plate lets you move your camera between tripod, gimbal, and cage in seconds, instead of screwing and unscrewing every time you switch setups.
Frequently Asked Questions
The camera or lens is usually just the starting point. A complete kit typically also includes a tripod or gimbal, extra batteries, memory cards fast enough for your footage (look for high write speeds for 4K/6K), a case or bag for transport, and basics like an ND filter or extra straps. Budgeting for these alongside your core kit means fewer surprise costs later — and you can always start with the essentials and add on as you go.
You can get started with just one light — a single key light dramatically improves most shots over available/room light alone. As your setups get more complex, a two-light kit (key + fill) covers most interview and talking-head work, and a full three-point setup (key, fill, and backlight) gives you the most control for polished, professional-looking video. Start with one good light and build from there rather than overspending upfront.
Repair times average 4-8 weeks, but can vary, depending on parts availability and the nature of the repair. You can bring your gear to any Henry's location, and repairs are sent to an authorized manufacturer service centre or one of Henry's approved service providers — there's no in-house repair work. Given that timeline, if you're working against a deadline, it's worth having a backup body or renting a replacement rather than counting on a repair finishing in time.
This varies significantly by camera — resolution, frame rate, ambient temperature, and whether you're using an external cooling accessory all affect it. Some cameras can record 4K for well over an hour, while others may limit continuous 4K/6K recording to avoid overheating.
If long, uninterrupted recording matters for your work (interviews, live events, documentaries), check the specific camera's recording limits before you buy, or come test it in-store.
Sticking within one lighting ecosystem keeps your modifiers, mounts, and batteries compatible as you build out your kit — which is why we've built our lighting lineup around amaran for most filmmakers, with Aputure's STORM series as the step-up option when you need more power. Staying in one family means everything from a softbox to a spare battery works across your whole kit as it grows.
