Rated 5 out of 5 by from "A ""must have"" for FE shooters!" "OMG, tack sharp! DXOmark & DPreview top rated. WOW. If you're buying any full-frame Sony, you're probably picky and have a high attention to photo details - you'll want this lens! I've got A-mount f1.4 50mm too, but this 55mm seems sharper and is also weather resistant there is no need for LA-EA4 adapter which isn't weather/dust resistant on your FE body. Buy it - you won't regret it."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceedingly Sharp Lens best used with a high resolution sensor "I used this lens on a Sony A7R, 36MP body. My reaction to the images produced by this pairing was WOW! Other lenses that produce great images with a 24MP sensor look better with the A7R's 36MP sensor. But to get the full advantage of that high resolution sensor you need a spectacular lens like this 55/1.8. I expect that there are not many lenses that can do justice to 36MP sensors. And, I'm describing the image quality using the lens wide open at f1.8! I've never had a lens that performed so well without stopping down at least a bit (2-3 stops with most lenses less than a stop with some really good lenses). This lens is super sharp, corner to corner- wide open. Unlike many ""fast"" lenses that must be stopped down (thereby losing the advantages of their large aperture) to get decent image quality, this lens performs exceptionally well at f1.8. Wide open the lens does have a bit of colour fringing. The Chromatic Aberration checkbox in Lightroom does not remove it the Defringe sliders eliminate it entirely (the amount never needs to be more than 4 or 5). This colour fringing drops away rapidly with increase in f-stop. At very small apertures (like f18), where I would expect significant diffraction effects, there is very little softening. I don't know if this is an inherent optical property of the lens or the result of a Sony algorithm being applied to the sensor data before it's written to a raw file. Excellent build quality smooth focusing ring (focus by wire). To realize the full performance potential of this lens it should be used with a high resolution sensor (like that in the Sony A7R)."
