  • 18.2 MP Compact Camera
  • 30x Optical Zoom
  • Exmor R CMOS Sensor
  • 180-degree Tiltable LCD
  • 30x zoom lens with ZEISS quality built in:
  • The result of over a century and a half of ZEISS expertise in high-precision optics is perfectly clear: this 24-720mm lens renders portrait, close-up, and landscape images in natural glory from every perspective, with vivid sharpness and contrast intact. ZEISS T* multi-layer anti-reflective coating effectively eliminates surface ghosting and flare.
  • Exmor R CMOS sensor for extra sensitivity:
  • The more light is allowed to strike a sensor, the more brilliant a resulting image will look. So the Exmor R CMOS sensor with 18.2 effective megapixels employs back-illuminated design to let four times more light in than a more conventional sensor, is twice as sensitive to light, and even features Sony Column A/D Conversion technology to reduce image noise.
  • BIONZ X for more detail and less noise:
  • To transform data from the Exmor R CMOS sensor into high-resolution images, the BIONZ X image processor integrates detail reproduction, diffraction-reducing and area-specific noise reduction technologies. This combination makes it possible to reproduce realistic images of truer colours and textures with exceptional precision in real time.
  • OLED Tru-Finder improves the view:
  • The high-contrast OLED Tru-Finder is far brighter than more conventional electronic viewfinders; now features even more compact dimensions; displays real-time preview and various shooting information, so that what you see onscreen is exactly what you'll get in your shot; and is retractable for portability, safety and practicality.
  • 180-degree tiltable LCD monitor for easy framing:
  • The high-resolution LCD on the camera back can be tilted up to 180 degrees. So when you're in front of the camera, you can easily view the LCD to check the framing before you shoot a selfie, for example. This flexibility also lets you comfortably maintain stress-free posture while monitoring a scene that you want to shoot from a low angle.
  • One-touch remote and one-touch sharing:
  • One-touch remote lets you use your smartphone or tablet as a viewfinder and remote control for a digital camera, and one-touch sharing lets you transfer your photos and videos from your camera. Either way, by installing PlayMemories Mobile app to your NFC-enabled Android smartphone or tablet, you can avoid complex set-up sequences and establish wireless connection simply by touching your device to the camera. You are now ready to control your camera from your smartphone to take a photo from a previously out-of-reach spot, or simply be in your own group shot, as well as transfer them instantly to your smartphone for sharing on SNS. No NFC? No problem. You can also pair the devices manually.
  • More flexible movie formats:
  • The new XAVC S format captures movies detailing extra-smooth action and high-quality sound with great fidelity to the original sources. Whether you're shooting in XAVC S or high-definition AVCHD format, you can also simultaneously record another version of the same scene in a compressed, web-friendly MP4 format for convenient sharing.
  • Grip take hold:
  • The camera grip has been ergonomically designed for optimal handling stability at all times.
  • Intelligent Active Mode keeps blur away:
  • Have no fear of handheld movie shooting. Intelligent Active Mode, featuring Sony's advanced frame-analysis technology and 5-axis image stabilization, compensates for camera shake. This mode reduces the blurriness that tends to occur in images when shooting handheld or shooting while chasing a subject in action.
  • Customizable settings for personal command:
  • Assign frequently used functions (Focus mode, White Balance, Picture Effect, etc.) to customizable buttons and keys for easier, quicker access to such functions while shooting. For example, you can assign 12 functions to the Function button, then press it, choose a function, and adjust the function parameters via the rear control wheel.
  • P/A/S/M modes for exposure as you like it:
  • Put your creative intentions in motion with Programmed AE (P)/Aperture priority (A)/Shutter-speed priority (S)/Manual (M) exposure modes. These modes provide you with all the flexibility that you need to manually control exposure and adjust background blur in order to capture the image that you're looking for.
  • Extra-speedy & precise Fast Intelligent AF:
  • An improved spatial object detection algorithm realizes a more optimal and accurate lens drive to make AF even faster, for capturing more fleeting moments with ease.
  • Digital level gauge for even framing:
  • The camera's digital level gauge uses easy-to-read graphics to indicate clearly whether the camera is level and enables fine adjustment of horizontal alignment during shooting.
  • It's useful for avoiding the occurrence of camera roll, to help ensure that your shots look steady and well-framed.
  • PlayMemories Camera Apps add personality:
  • Enhance your creative expression with PlayMemories Camera Apps, offering a growing range of enjoyable applications that are easy to download. Not only do these apps give you greater functionality ? they are the ultimate means of personalizing your camera to fulfil your photographic aims.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slick Camera Purchased the HX80 after reading many reviews and comparing with other compact cameras. Wanted this camera to carry all of the time so that I never miss a Sony "snap it" moment. Love that it shoots in Aperture, Shutter, or Manual Mode. Also since I'm familiar with DSLR and Mirrorless cameras found this camera easy to navigate and find the various features, which I found most in a day without reading the manual. Have had the HX80 for about a week and find that it takes great pictures inside and out. Love the popup viewfinder. I like the feel of the camera, the sizing is great, easy to handle and really easy to carry in my purse or my jacket/coat pocket. Also purchased the jacket case for it that fits it perfect. Slick camera with cool case. Highly recommend the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic features and great zoom all in a small p I bought this for my wife to use as I generally go for my trusty DSLR. However, I have to say that I'm constantly going more often for this camera as well. It's so small, has fantastic zoom range and has great features for such a compact camera. IMHO this is a highly underrated camera. Typical of a camera like this, it takes really good pictures when there's decent light and not so good in the darker areas (compared to my DSLR). I love the video mode on this camera - takes better video than my DSLR (no rolling shutter syndrome like DSLR's) and does so in HD (1080P) As I get older, I also find that flip-out screen gets used more and more. This camera has me looking at replacing my DSLR with one of the smaller, mirrorless, inter-changeable lens cameras next!. This little thing also feels very solid in your hands - it doesn't feel like a cheap toy camera at all. If you're to travel with this camera, get a second battery just to be safe but the battery life is fairly decent. Oh, I almost forgot, that pop-up view finder - what a wonderful little feature! For those of you that are used to composing a shot with a DSLR, this will be a blessing to you. Thanks Sony...this camera was obviously designed by a team that knows how to take a photograph and has considered both older more conventional shooters as well as the younger audience.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice but... I bought this late last year, to replace my HX30 (which is developing problems). Many of the same features, but I 'upgraded' very specifically for the viewfinder, a feature inexplicably missing in p&s cameras (apparently engineers think an LCD screen is usable in bright sunlight). Almost the same as the 30, but added NFC and subtracted GPS. Really aggravating, however - no internal memory - doing anything other than taking a single photo is impossible w/o a memory card - a step down from the 30. Worse, the screen display: one option is ridiculously overloaded with icons (but is the only one to constantly display the battery charge), the other 2 reasonably barren (but w/o the battery), and according to both my Sony FB and chat respondents, the user cannot modify/select the desired icons for display. How do I get my strong request for that modification to the software design/engineering dept???

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind-Boggling Walk-Around/Travel/Vacation CameraI I have had this camera for almost two years; it is the most satisfying P&S I have ever had. Outdoors in P Mode with Multi-segment metering, Wide focus area, Auto ISO (80-800) and Auto DRO, it can't miss. I leave Creative Style set at Contrast -1, Saturation +2 and Sharpness at +1 for virtually all occasions. I do adjust White Balance manually as I see fit! Also, I stay below 300mm equivalent 35mm focal length. Noise is rarely a problem. Highly recommended!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the features I bought this 3 weeks ago, I have since taken selfies, candids, and used the movie feature. I love the aperture setting and the intelligent settings. I bought this to have a quick point and shoot. I use Sony exclusively and chose between this and the NEX 5. This was more compact and I don't need to change lenses. The features are very similar to my professional cameras (a900,a77,a99). I have fun with this one and can grab and go without packing extra accessories. Love the view finder option. The sun out west in the desert is extreme and makes it hard to see the screen. No problem with this one! Love the camera, the functions, the ease of use and programing. I definitely recommend if you don't need GPS. If you want GPS take a look at the next generation DSC HX90V

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed. I bought this camera 5 months ago. My children are older teenagers now, so I don't take nearly the photos I use to. Now its only used at a family gathering here or a week's vacation there. Since owning this camera I have experienced times when the lens will not deploy when it is turned on (although the screen comes one) and just today, took a bunch of photos while at the zoo and not a single photo was actually captured/recorded. All operations of the camera indicated that it was in full working condition. I don't know why none of my zoo photos were actually captured or why it seems to be working fine now that I'm home. I have owned several Sony cameras over the years and have always loved them. Not feeling a lot of love for this Sony camera.
