  • High-performance Zoom Lens
  • Image Stabilization
  • Internal Focusing
  • Filter Diameter: 55mm
  • Compact, lightweight, and specifically designed to bring out the best in the a7-series full-frame E-mount cameras
  • Zoom range extends from 28mm-70mm, and an advanced design minimizes overall lens length
  • Circular Aperture:
  • When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred
  • This 'bokeh' effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens
  • Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light
  • Alpha lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops
  • Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result
  • Aspherical lens elements:
  • Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight
  • Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane
  • This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses
  • Specially shaped "aspherical" elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion
  • Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight
  • Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are an evolved variant, featuring an extremely high thickness ratio between the centre and periphery
  • AA elements are exceedingly difficult to produce, relying on the most advanced molding technology to consistently and precisely achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image accuracy and quality
  • ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass:
  • As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower colour quality, and lower resolution
  • ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings
  • Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration
  • Lens-based optical image stabilization:
  • Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur
  • The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills
  • Internal focusing:
  • Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change
  • Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance
  • Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you're using a polarizing filter

Additional Information

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value and performance. Surprisingly like the 24-70mm it is “Dust and moisture-resistant design”. Nice touch for a value lens. The lens barely extends at all during its full zoom sweep. Not internal zoom technically, but as close as you could get. Small and light. Silent focus. Fast focusing, especially in good light as is expected. OSS, or Image Stabilization. In their value offering. This combined with the last few bullets lets you know that high content value Sony lenses were possible. Versatile. With its humble aperture specs there is no mind blowing bokeh, nor sliver thin depth of field to be found here, but that is it. It can muster acceptable isolation under the right conditions but is excels at nearly anything else that falls within its focal range.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suprising Performance. Man, kit lenses have come a far way. I've been pleasantly surprised by the sharpness and overall contrast this lens provides. No issues shooting it wide open, however limited the aperature is in low light. If you can't take compelling pics with this lens, then...well....it's not the lens. Nice and light too. Every 7 series owner should have this in their bag. Just no reason not too. Very happy with mine and I have quite a bit of Zeiss to compare it to. It's every bit as good within it's range. First time I can say I don't mind using the "kit" lens on a day out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very good performer Personally I enjoy using this kit lens - out there, in real life, away from charts and all that, the IQ is actually very good for a kit lens and performs very well on the a7m2 and a6000.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Beginner Lens This lens comes as a kit lens when you purchase the Alpha A7. For a starter lens the image quality it is pretty good. It makes for a good general purpose lens and has a decent zoom. The autofocus is very quick and very quiet. For the price, the overall quality of the lens is excellent. Just what you expect to see from Sony. Although the value is very good, I would not have bought this lens if it was not included with my camera. My main issue with this lens is the aperture. With only a maximum of F3.5, I felt limited almost immediately. For my shooting preference, I would like to see this lense with maybe an F2.8 or F2. Don’t be discouraged by this, though. It is still a very well rounded lens. Good to learn on. I would recommend it to anyone that has just gotten into photography with a Sony E-Mount body.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I needed an autofocus lens. I knew I wanted an Alpha7 camera and I had no Sony lenses. This lens was within reach when bought along with the Camera. I have no bad things to say about this lens. I like the close focusing ability and the pictures I have taken with it are satisfactory as far as I am concerned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens This is a perfect lens for anyone who can make do with a limited number of lenses. It has a very useful zoom range and great clarity. It's a little bulky, but no worse than most mid range zooms. If it weren't for the fact that I have other lenses that span above and below the zoom range of this one it would be my go-to lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, Reasonably-Priced Full-Frame Lens Perfectly balances my a7r, very sharp and good contrast, and nice on-lens controls. A very good value for a first full-frame lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great and Versatile Lens As kit lenses go, this one is pretty decent. Great lens to have on a budget.
