  • Mid-range Zoom Lens
  • Circular Aperture Design
  • Dust and Moisture Resistant
  • Filter Diameter: 67mm
  • A compact mid-range zoom that delivers outstanding performance with 35mm full frame format cameras:
  • This compact, high-performance 35mm full frame format mid-range zoom lens has been specifically designed bring out the full performance potential of the Alpha 7-series full frame E-mount bodies
  • True to the "Tessar" concept, the SEL2470Z offers superior sharpness and contrast in a ultra-compact lens design
  • Carl Zeiss T* coating, five aspherical elements, and one ED glass element combine to deliver superior image quality:
  • The T* (T-star) coating contributes to typically outstanding Carl Zeiss image quality, with high contrast and uniformly excellent resolution right out to the image edges
  • The coating subdues reflections at the lens surfaces, increasing transmission and minimizing flare and ghosting that can compromise rendering
  • Natural color reproduction and impressive presence give subjects a lifelike quality
  • Five aspherical elements and one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element in an advanced optical design reduce aberration and distortion to a minimum.
  • Constant F4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range:
  • A constant F4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range allows the user to use optimum exposure parameters that will create the desired "look" at any focal length
  • The ability to use F4 at the telephoto end of the zoom range also reduces the need to use high ISO settings, and allows the use of high shutter speeds to capture action when necessary
  • A circular aperture design helps to deliver smooth background defocusing
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization:
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization provides a marked reduction in image blur caused by camera shake, especially when shooting handheld at telephoto focal lengths or in dim
  • indoor lighting
  • In the Anti Motion Blur and Handheld Twilight modes this technology makes it easier than ever to shoot clear, blur-free, low-noise images at night, indoors, or in any conditions that would otherwise be a challenge due to low light conditions, without having to boost sensitivity
  • Dust and moisture resistant design:
  • Critical areas of the lens exterior feature dust and moisture resistant seals that help to ensure professional reliability even in tough environmental conditions

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This new lense by Sony has potential I like the lens but it is less sharp at 24mm than at 35mm to 70mm range. The image stabilization works well and reduces the need for a tripod. I hiked with the camera and lens on dusty trails for three days without any dust related issues. This is my normal lens on the Sony A7R. Overall I like the lens and hope there will be a software fix to correct 24mm soft focus issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from General zoom for A7R Lens is a little larger and heavier than 55/1.8 but covers a nice range. Tests I did on sharpnes in the corners shows very good performance as does a number of independent tests not as good as the two primes (35, 55) but you won't notice this for 99% of your shots. It is an ideal walk around lens and fits nicely in a small camera case.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Versital fe lens for A7/A7R/A7S The FE 24-70 is versatile. But for a lens with an f/4.0, this lens was expensive. I needed a single lens for my new A7R. The FE 24-70 has lens stabilization. (Sony calls the feature "Optical Steady Shot.") I wish the body was stabilized, like my Olympus E-M1, E-M5, and E-5. Perhaps the rumored Sony "Pro" mirrorless FF, which may be released in 2015, will have in-body stabilization. I shoot Olympus m4/3 and 4/3 so I have no native lenses for the Sony A7R which I could mount with an adapter. I've ordered the Zeiss 55mm FE f/1.8 and I look forward to shooting with the 55mm. I also look forward to more fast Sony FE primes in 2015. In the A7R menu, you can turn on the APS-C feature and the 24-70 is magnified 1.5x. This ads to the versatility of the FE 24-70.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's a Zoom - what did you expect? It's hard to describe how much I like the A7r - but one of the things that comes with it is that punishing 36MP sensor. I knew in my heart that a mid-level (but premium priced) zoom lens would not be perfect - but my hopes were high. Basically, it's an average peer to lenses like the Canon 24-105 f/4, 24-70 f/4, and Sony 16-50G. Shooting with the lens, a few things are very clear. First the BAD: 1) It is Not a bag of prime lenses. You will not see nearly the quality of the FE 35mm and 55mm lenses, or other system primes mounted via adapter 2) The distortion is extreme. The camera will try to correct this if you shoot JPG or process RAW in Sony software - but I use Adobe LR. The distortion is wild at 24mm and 70mm - you will see pixel smearing and lose field of view if you correct it. 3) The corners are very soft at 24mm - 28mm, no matter how you stop down. There is no way to improve that. If you resize down to 25-50% it looks a little better (as expected) 4) 70mm is not terribly sharp. Actually, you probably get about as much detail at 70mm as you would at 60mm or 55mm and cropping. This means, that you really have a very good 35-60mm zoom lens, and a kind of so-so 24-28mm and 60-70mm lens 5) Autofocus is rarely quite right - for critical focus I always have to use DMF to fine tune things The GOOD: 1) Center sharpness is great - and this is the part that matters most 2) The contrast and resulting colors are very good, almost Zeiss-like 3) The performance between 35mm and 55mm is excellent - like REALLY exxcellent, stop down just a little to get a very good sharpness across the frame 4) The optical stabilization is amazing. I'm shooting 50mm at 1/5sec with no problem. I'm loving it! Bottom line - this is a zoom lens. It's expensive, but fair considering the reasonable size. Don't expect miracles - it's a zoom lens. For what it is, it's an average and solid performer. I'm keeping it. If you don't need 24mm or aren't very particular, consider the kit lens. It's probably 70-80% as good and less than half the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Lens This is a workhorse of a lens for me until the wide angle 16-35 becomes available. It is sharp and preforms as good as it's big brother 24-70 f2.8 It is light and great for hiking and when coupled to the A7r it is a powerful tool in my camera bag. I did testing for sweet spot and the lens performed super at all focal lengths f/8 the best but 5.6 to 16 was also excellent with f4 and 22 useable. I have used the lens wide open on stars and the performance is phenomial.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens I have to say I love this lens. After putting it through some tests I found it to be very sharp throughout the len's range. Reading some reviews about the focus speed being slow, I didn't have this seems as fast as any other F4 lens I have. Great everyday lens...tad on the heavy side but I'll take that any day over being cheaply built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from V-T 24-70 ...............A-1 My Vario-Tessar T FE 24-70mm F4 AZ OSS performed wonderfully as I played with my new "a-7" mirrorless camera system during a week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, recently. Easy of handling, and pristine focus capabilities made for a cakewalk....... with more practice I will be able to push the envelope a bit.......many thanks for a superb product,.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from NOT enthusiast grade glass! I'd hoped for a better experience from this lens than I had ... Had to return the first iteration and try several others in store to find one that didn't have: excessive vignetting, overall image softness across the range and especially in the corners between 24-35mm. In addition, when I found a lens that seemed to be a better representation I still had to tune the lens in camera when I got home to eliminate excessive back focus (which may be the cause of so many of the lenses looking "soft" while trying to find an acceptable lens)! This lens is "hit or miss". Be prepared to accept a mediocre version and then having to do some tuning in camera to get it where it should be out of the box. Now I can enjoy the lens but this is frankly an unacceptable experience for a product with this cost and coming from a company like Sony while wearing the Zeiss badge. I'd also considered the 28-70mm kit lens in the beginning but unfortunately had heard that it is much, much worse (typical kit lens performance!).

Is the Sony FE 24-70 mm f/4 ZA VARIO-TESSAR T* lens an appropriate lens for use on the Sony a6500 mirrorless camera, or is there another Sony 24-70 mm lens that would be a better choice?

    Asked by: dale
Hi Dale, The Sony A6500 camera has a cropped sensor. Using a full frame lens will result in your not receiving the full benefits of the lens, namely the wide angle field of view that the 24mm provides with a full frame camera. The SEL18-70 F4 lens would afford you the wide field of view and a little more telephoto zoom on the higher end.
