Good Entry Level ring flash
"Great little unit for anyone looking for a cheap lighting solution for amateur Macro or Portrait photography. The brightness dial lets you dial in the brightness you need for the situation. there are buttons that toggle flash mode, continuous mode and left/right. There is no TTL metering.
The ring flash mates to an adapter that screws on your lenses filter thread. There are adapters included for filter sizes from 49mm to 77mm. The mount adapters are plastic and feel a tad flimsy. None have broken yet, but I only carry one or two for filter sizes for the lenses I carry with me, so I try to keep them packed flat and protected from impacts. The Flash unit has 4 tabs that fit into a channel in the mount adapter. The tabs fit confidently into the channel, and are loose enough to allow the flash to rotate on the adapter. This is important for changing orientation while using left or right flash only mode. (The unit can rotate in the mount so that when changing from landscape orientation to portrait Left and right will still be left and right)
The ring flash unit also mounts on the controller for use as a hot shoe flash. It mounts diagonally so the left/right functions are useless, but it's not an issue mounted high on the hotshoe. It's listed as Guide number 15 but it's for macro work and portraiture so it wasn't designed to throw a lot of light out over long distances or wide fields of view. I counted 60 LED's. The unit uses 4 AA cells which last a long time as the LED's use very little power. This also means the unit remains cool to the touch, even when lit in continuous mode.
All in all, the unit provides alot of light for the cost, the brightness can be dialed down to suit your needs and it provides basic flash functions for Macro and Portrait work at a rock bottom price. Build quality feels a little flimsy, especially in the threaded mount adapters but you have to expect that as a tradeoff in this pricepoint. I have a multi-tool in my bag that costed more than this. Pro's will want a more capable unit, but for family and hobbyist photographers on a tighter budget, this is a great low cost ring flash alternative."
