Great camera in a small package.
"I got this camera for travel. It's got a solid build quality with nice tactile response on the buttons. I tried the OMD EM-5 as well, and while it is also a nice camera, the ""squish"" on the buttons (likely due to weather sealing as that camera is water resistant) was annoying for me. The GX1 is extremely responsive to user input, with little delay when shooting or moving through menus.
This camera can use a wide array of micro four thirds lenses. Several high quality options are available from fast primes to wide zooms.
If you're coming from a full frame or crop camera, this camera will most likely not match the dynamic range you're used to and it has more shadow noise and more severe highlight rolloff than those cameras, but what it lacks in DR it makes up for in size. The camera is small, the lenses are small, and you won't get as tired carrying it around all day.
The camera features a nice grip adequate for its size, though larger lenses will feel unbalanced on this camera. Pancake primes and smaller zooms like the included kit lens or the 7-14 will feel ok, but lenses like the panasonic 100-300 will feel very lopsided and be difficult to operate due to the package being unbalanced.
The camera severely needs an EVF, which can be purchased separately, but it would be nice if it was included in the body.
The hotshoe is a nice addition and works with 3rd party flashes and wireless triggers as well, if you would like to use this camera for flash photography.
Overall, this camera is fun to use, doesn't get in the way of taking great photos, and comes in a well built lightweight package. Don't expect it to match the image quality of your full frame cameras, but the best camera is the one you have with you."
