Henrys Spring Photo Guide

With Spring fast approaching, March can often inspire us to travel, to clean, to escape the same ol' and spread our wings wide. There are plenty of opportunities to discover a new hobby with photography or to expand your knowledge of the art. Get outside to explore early spring ephemerals, awakening and returning animals and insects, the changing colours of light.

For those of us who are planning to travel, we'll be featuring blog articles and tips on what gear to pack, what to buy, and what to shoot when you get to where you're going.

There are also a number of cultural and social events at this time of year, many revolving around fashion, such as Toronto Women's Fashion Week. Henry's and Sony explore fashion photography with free special events.

This March, we explore Travel, Fashion and Spring through the eyes of photographers.

Capture Spring Fashion

Fashion photography, while it may look off-the-cuff and instantaneous, usually begins with the exact opposite: Careful planning and attention to detail to get just that right shot are what it’s all about. Nourish your interest in fashion photography this month!

Fashion Tips from Henry's

Henry's may not be the first place you go to for fashion tips, but if you want in-depth details on what’s hot in photography, Henry’s is definitely the place to go!

When shooting Fashion:

  • Know the rules, then break ‘em. In a good portrait shot, place the subject’s eyes in the a third of the way down from the top of the frame. To get a great shot, though, let your personal style shine through.
  • Plan ahead. It’s not enough to show up with amazing gear and get amazing shots. When planning a shoot, think about what feeling you want to convey in the shots you’re after, who the audience will be, and what the goal is of the images you are going to create.
  • Follow the lines. Creating visual art is about establishing and manipulating lines that draw and lead the eye. Repositioning your subject in sometimes subtle ways - the tilt of chin, the fall of fabric - can dramatically alter the scene.

Come Into Bloom

Spring’s first hesitant steps awaken a desire to get outside again, and many of us reach for cameras that have been stuck in closets since Christmas. Tulip tips erupt from the cold ground. Robins return from the south. Fat raindrops fall from the sky. Snow melts. And rivers run. There are hundreds of opportunities to capture photos that help us rediscover the delicate and powerful beauty of the season.

Photographing Flowers

What is a Macro Lens?

Flower photography is at the forefront of springtime photo opportunities. There's something about the quality of sun light that provides for beautiful photos showcasing the translucent nature of flower petals, solo or en masse. For moments like this, macro lenses help you create images that you’ll return to and treasure again and again.

Check out "Versatility - The Mid Focal Length Macro Lens" on our blog to explore the perks of a macro lens. We also cover helpful tips for capturing the beauty of Spring blooms in our article "How to Photograph Flowers".

Ready to take your skills to the next level? Henry's Learning Lab All-Access Pass gives you 1000s of hours of learning for all your photography needs and features lessons in Macro Photography. With classes available online all the time, you can learn everywhere on your computer, iPad, iPhone or Android. Best of all, you can learn on your own schedule, at your own pace.

Springtime Landscape Photography

Springtime Landscape

If you have the opportunity to visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton, or the streets of Vancouver, or even high park in Toronto, among other places, at the right time in the spring you can witness and capture photos of cherry trees and lilac trees in bloom. While there are plenty of amazing photos to be shot with macro lenses here, too, widen you're perspective to partake of the landscape.

Spend a few minutes looking at your surroundings before shooting. Move around, and always look back where a gem shot may normally be overlooked. Never settle for the first view and risk missing a masterpiece! Make sure you're ready to capture the breathtaking scenery; before heading out, head over to our blog for The Best Landscape Photography Tips.
