In our Compact System Cameras 101 course we will show you how to lessen your dependence on your camera's Automatic mode and gain greater control over the quality of your photographs. We will explore effective focus techniques and settings for changing the brightness and colour of your photos. In addition, we will explain when and how to use the camera's built-in flash and how ISO can help you get results in low light scenes. During the session you will be using your own camera under the guidance of our instructor to become more comfortable with your camera and the controls essential to everyday photography.
- Basic camera and menu operation - Overview of Scene Modes - Controlling Focus Modes and Areas - How ISO can be helpful in challenging situations - Changing your picture's brightness - When and how to use your camera's flash - Ensuring faithful and accurate colours - Choosing the right lens for the shot

We were a relatively small group of seven with four different camera brands among us. Despite this, the course instructor had obviously acquired a wide range of experience and, throughout the session, was able to direct each of us to where in our respective camera's menu system we needed to be to set up or adjust the options being discussed at the time. (We benefited further from having three Henry's employees sitting in to offer even more in-depth advice if required, but the instructor's knowledge was certainly more than up to our "101" requirements.) I found it an excellent overview of a very complicated camera (200-plus page instruction manual!) and am looking forward to applying some of the suggestions picked up over the course's three-hour duration.

When I took this course there were 7 in the class. 6 of us had the sony NEX so that was nice. I felt the class was WAY too easy. If you have some digital camera experience you might as well sleep through the whole first hour or more. If you have very limited photography skills this would be good. I wish that I had know that I could have taken 201 I thought this was a required prerequisite for 201. Instructor was great. Material is great. I registered online maybe I should have gone into the store and shared my knowledge and the Henry's staff would have singed me off for 201 instead.
Took this course yesterday at Henry's in Ancaster. Learnt just enough (but no too much) about my camera and some basic controls to feel much more confident getting out of auto mode. Speed of instruction was just right and instructor was engaging. Would recommend this for anyone with new compact camera, especially if it had been a while since you had thought about ISO, aperture and focal length. Off to practise!
