  • Super Cool-Just the kick in pants I needed!!!!!!!!!

Well done Henry's SOI and a special thanx to your instructor, Trevor in Ottawa. This course was precisely what I needed to tear myself away from the dreaded "auto" function. The course material was well thought out, very informative, layman based for a budding amateur and incentive driven to learn even more. The weekly assignments are key and really get you thinking about the image that you want to capture, not to mention applying just the right amount of theory to understanding the basic mechanics of DSLR camera, lens and optic fundamentals in the progression of producing a satisfying end result. After the first class, I found myself obsessed with learning all I could for the duration of the course; which by the way, hasn’t stopped, and I’m loving this “seeing everything as a picture” evolution. Interacting with the other participants is also refreshing, as the “I’m not the only newbie” feeling quickly dissipated and made sharing concepts and ideas exhilarating. Again, kudos to the SOI for making this a great experience, one that will require continuing with further courses. Ciao,

I just finished this course last night and would highly recommend it. I've have a DSLR since last summer (and an SLR for many years) and have never taken it off "auto". I'd heard about shutter speeds and aperture but had no idea what they meant. Now I do! It's amazing how much I learned and how much better my photos are.

This class was worth every penny! Our instructor, Glenn, was able to share his knowledge in manner that was level appropriate. His practical tips gave me that little bit of extra confidence to practice the technical workings of my camera as well as take that "perfect picture". Thank you, Glenn. When are you teaching 201?

  • Excellent class!

Before taking this class, all I ever used was the auto and scene modes. Using the manual or priority modes was a nightmare because my images always turned too dark. Now I feel I have great knowledge of how my DSLR works and how I could adjust the shutter speed, aperture and ISO to get the best results possible! I really recommend the class to everyone! We got great tips and tricks from the instructor, who is a Professional Photographer. I'm ready to go out and explore the world with my camera!

  • Excellant for taking the leap from point and shoot

Like everyone, I've had my share of point and shoot digital cameras. Each new iteration included more and more of the creative controls /features normally found on DSLR's. But not knowing how to use any of those controls, I usually picked Automatic or a Scene mode. I've always wanted to take the step to DSLR but I feared that without the knowledge, my shots would get worse, not better. This course teaches you everything you need to know to gain control over your photos. I learned a great deal of very useful information that I was able to apply immediately with excellent results. I took a 2 week trip to Italy and fired off 3000+ shots, using a very useful feature "bracketing". This literally saved my bacon. I also learned how to maximize the light coming into the camera so I could take low light photos in museums and churches where flashbulbs are either discouraged or prohibited. Terms like White Balance, Aperature, ISO, Diopter and Exposure compensation are no longer a mystery. I saw alot of people in Italy with $5000 camera's firing flashes in Museums, and also banging their glasses into their viewfinders ! Too bad they didn't take this Henry's course !!

  • An excellent foundation

This course provides a solid foundation for ANY photographer, be they digital or film. As per the course description, it covers ISO, aperture, shutter speeds and depth of field but, more importantly, it ties them all together and teaches you how they affect one another, ultimately giving you far greater creative control over your pictures. With the instructor being a professional photographer we picked up useful insights and tips for various situations. I highly recommend this course! One recommendation: You will get more from this course if you are already familiar with the basic controls on your camera. Consider taking one of the camera specific courses first if needed!
