I recently took this course with the hope of learning the basics of my camera and learned so much more. Duke was the most amazing teacher and I look forward to taking more of the classes he instructs.

BY: Dan On Sunday I took the DSLR 101 course in Nepean, at the Henry's Store. I enjoy the course termendously, George Karam was an excellent teacher. He went above and beyond the course out line and was able to answer all questions that came up. Getting the course notes is an added benifit, Thanks. Had a good time and hope to attend more courses. will recommend to my freinds.

  • Fabulous Course!

Today in Brampton, I took my first ever DSLR course. I knew nothing about my Cannon Rebel. I now feel comfortable with it, and can't wait to make use of all of the information given during the course. Cyndal, our instructor, was excellent, and even helped me find some additional equipment after the course, which she didn't have to do. Overall, it was an excellent experience, and having the class notes available for download on my computer made me focus on the class, and experiment, rather than constantly having to take notes. Thank you Cyndal, thank you Henry's!

  • Amazing course, highly recommend it.

Today I was fortunate enough to have a one on one course with Matthew. He is an amazing teacher and I learned a lot on how to use my Canon Rebel. I received the camera for Christmas, my husband thought it was a good idea because we are going to Europe in September. I was unsure on how to use the camera properly, so off to class I went. I was apprehensive at first, but Matthew put me at easy right away. I had an enjoyable few hours and now I hopefully can put into practice the things he taught me. I am now inspired to try taking pictures this week of the outside world and my grandchildren. Thank you Matthew, you were great and I highly recommend this course to Canon Rebel owners. Sign up today, you will not be disappointed!

  • Great Class

I have been shooting with point and shoot cameras that I had become pretty familiar with. Getting my first DSLR was scary, but necessary, in order to grow as a photographer. I wanted to be able to know what I was doing, at least a bit! So I signed up for this class. Brendan was an excellent instructor. He made sure everyone had a chance to figure things out and gave us a bit of practice time. I recommend this to anyone who is still shooting in Auto Mode because there is so much more you can do and he'll show you how to do it.

  • Fantastic! If you're new to using a Canon DSLR sign up NOW!

If you have recently purchased a Canon DSLR and are new to shooting outside of Auto Mode, you MUST take this course! I thought I could figure out things on my own but I can now say that having someone walk you through every feature of the camera will help you maximize its potential and take better pictures. I've had my Canon Rebel T3i for nearly a year. It's been to a wedding in Punta Cana, a trip to New York, to several parties and family gatherings. While I did get a few nice shots from each event, I was disappointed that I wasn't getting a larger volume of good shots. I had been spending way too much time fumbling with flash, modes and menus. Within minutes of attending this course, I already got my money's worth! And I was about 20 minutes late arriving to boot! LOL! On that note, late or not, people will forget things quickly. Not to worry as Henry's gives you a password to access the class notes / presentation so you can go back and reread whatever you like. Our instructor, Brennen, was excellent! He kept topics moving along so no one got bored but he also didn't talk "over our heads". He addressed questions from beginners and more advanced students alike. I was amazed at how quickly the course time flew by. It's 100% hands on so you get to snap away at things in the classroom to test out features as you learn. Brilliant! This course exceeded my expectations and I would recommend it to anyone new to this kind of camera. Think about it, after spending hundreds of dollars on such a sophisticated piece of equipment, you owe it to yourself to make the small investment to learn how to use all of its features! Thanks Henry's! You rock! Looking forward to taking 201 soon and perhaps even the Travel Photography and Food Photography courses someday!

Dave, thanks for the information about this course. I attended this workshop this morning, and glad I did. I bought my camera a few weeks ago, and was anxious to learn how to use it properly. I learned a lot about my new camera, and can't wait to try it out. Seriously thinking of taking the next DSLR 201 workshop. I would recommend this workshop to anyone, who's bought a new Canon Rebel

Can't wait to try all the information that was given to me last night. Learning what my camera can do was amazing. Love that you can download the notes at home so you can concentrate on the course. Great instructor - he never moved on until we were all comfortable. Looking forward to my next course!!

I attended this workshop last night. Great workshop. I'm so glad I went. I bought my camera a few weeks ago and was anxious to learn how to use it properly. I was familiar with some of the controls having previous canon cameras but those were point and shoot models. I had gone through some of the manual but found it hard to understand. Bob, our instructor, was very informative. He answered questions without it affecting the course outline. We learned about using point and shoot modes, shutter speed, changing ISO, picture size, focusing, when and when not to use the flash, how to override some settings and what additional equipment might be helpful.I have downloaded the course notes and will be reviewing what I learned. Can't wait to start practising some more and booking my next workshop - 201 here I come!

Henry's in Newmarket is the best! I would like to thank Quyen for all that he has done, very knowledgable and fun, and thank you for recommending this DSLR 101 course. I have had my camera now for almost 2 years and never came close to using it to its full ability. Actually, I was quite afraid of hitting a wrong button and strayed from playing with it in fear of doing something wrong and not being able to get it back to the way it was. I even had Quyen set my camera for my son's hockey games. Long story short, on January 20, 2012, I took the course. Martin was amazing! He made it so easy with his examples and hands on learning and was clear with his explanations. He made a point of going to everyone individually and making sure they knew how and what they were doing. I am now registered in DSLR 201 and can't wait. Congratulations Newmarket on a job well done! You should be proud!

  • Now I know how to use my camera without leaving it on Auto!

  • June 11, 2011
  • By: Sidman

I recently picked up a Canon Rebel T3i and was overwhelmed by the amount of buttons and functions. After a few weeks of shooting in auto only I registered for the Oakville class and am extremely happy that I did. I now feel confident and comfortable using most of the features of my new camera. The class size was intimate (8 people) and the instructor Danielle was not only very knowledgeable, but also very open to all of our questions and made sure that all of use were understanding everything that was being presented. I just downloaded the workshop notes as they will be a great way to refresh my memory as I play with my camera from here on in. Can't wait to take the DSLR 2 course soon.

A few people recommended this course to me but I wasn't sure I needed it. So glad I went! I was amazed at how quickly the 3 hours went by. Just about everything was useful for me. I could use my camera before but wasn't taking advantage of many benefits. The instructor, Kylie, was great. Downloading the course PDF was easy. Makes me look forward to the next course.

Like Jen, I was skeptical of my need for the class, being familiar with Canon point and shoots but thought a course couldn't hurt but now I realize, I barely scratched the surface of photography, and this was an excellent starter, from understanding the various controls to intro to photo basics, I can already see how my photos have improved - can't wait for part 2!

I've never owned a (D)SLR but have owned plenty of Canon Point and Shoots and actually thought twice about needing a beginngers class for my T2i that I recently got as a gift. I thought wrong. Within the first 15 mins I had already benefitted from the class. The instructor was efficient, the lessons were straight forward and I left feeling confident and not at all overwhelemed. Very much looking forward to my Canon Part 2 class. Had no problems downloading the notes either.

This course is an absolute must if you have purchased your first DSLR! I cannot say enough about how wonderful this course was. The knowledge you gain is amazing. The class is set up so that it is hands-on, yet no one is singled out, and everyone is a "newbie". Best of all, it is fun!!!

  • Get the most out of your camera

I had my camera for about a year when I took this. While I'd shot 35 mm before (Canon T70), I had not ventured too far of the program modes with my DLSR. Easy to follow and well delivered; I took part 1 and 2. This really gets you comfortable with your camera, with the different modes, and with the menus and buttons. Well worth the $75.00 (actually got two for one when booking at the Imaging Show.

  • Well worth it

  • January 30, 2012

I bought the Canon T2i over the holidays, first time owning a DSLR. I'd been more "into" photography 20yrs ago but decided to take this as part refresher and part intro to specific features of my camera. I'd say it was mostly review for me as a lot of the content was very introductory but I picked up 4 or 5 specific things that I didn't know and have put into use already. I'm glad I went, it was worth it! The only feedback I have is the presenter tried too hard to not be too technical but when he describes the aperture as "how big the hole is in the lens", he's gone a bit too far! Take a minute to explain the aperture concept, instead of calling it "the hole"!

Was my first time taking a class at Henry's. I did enjoy the 3hrs, it was very informative. The instructor made the class fun, answered all questions, was very helpful and full of knowledge. Because it was only 3hrs long, only the basics could be covered. It is a good place to start to become familiar with your new DSLR.

The class was very interesting and informative, I learned a few new things about my camera. Downloading the notes from the class was very difficult and at the time of me writing this I still haven't been able to. I called the location and got an answering machine (during business hours) and I called the 1-800 number and the lines were all busy. Should be hassle free but it's not.

  • Disappointed

I took the DLSR Part 1 course last evening to learn how to use a newly purchased Rebel Ti3. Let me tell you I am a DSLR rookie and rally needed this course to help me with my new camera. I understood the class was to learn how to use THIS camera. However I believe I was the only person in the class with the Ti3. The real problem however was a person in the class with a very old version of a Canon DSLR which was not compatible with the course slides. The instructor spent so much time helping this person relate that the class overran 30 minuts to 9pm and there was still insufficient time to properly go over exposure compensation and ISO settings....2 important features according to the instructor. I did learn a lot about the camera but left the class wanting for more information.

  • Was good but........

  • May 09, 2010
  • By: Brian

I am new to SLR photography (used a point and shoot camera for years) and the course was good and imformative but: A roll call should have been held between students (i.e instructor asks every student their name, how much experience they have and what they expect to gain of out the course). No real mention about shutter speeds, aperture and a brief overview on ISO. I still don't know what these terms mean, so I will go on and look this stuff up myself on the web. I think the course could have been a hour longer and concentrated on these features. There did not seem to be any drinking facilities there either....if I had known, I would have brought my own. A list of what is provided on the course displayed on the website would have been nice (e.g. bring a notepad, drinks, etc). Maybe a suggestion for the future...... The instructor had good experience, but seemed a bit clumsy with the Canon menus and some of the class had to tell him what some of the menus did! I wish there were tables within the training room, the room seemed a bit too informal for me, but that is my opinion and this just stemed from other training courses that I have attended over several years. I did ask lots of questions at the end of the course, and the instructor was very good about this, and did not kick anyone out. A good course as this gets over the fear of using the camera (like me!!) and the instructor was very good at making people feel at ease, and did not make any feel stupid when they asked a question. Thank you Henry's!!
