  • Pro Glass, worth every penny

  • February 04, 2011
  • By: Steve

This is an amazing piece of glass. Best quality zoom in this focal length. It is small and light, and the quality on both DX and FX bodies is stellar. Anyone who knows the least bit about photography will appreciate the incredible value for the money. Fast 2.8 aperture makes it great for indoor events without needing a flash.

I am completely in love with this lens, this lens does have a fair weight to it but all pro glass does, this lens is so incredibly sharp and gives such amazing Bokah with an ultra fast focus ability.images simply pop and have stunning colour even on a dx body. I had the 18-200 and traded it in on this lens. the difference is so obvious. with my18-20 indoor shots were either blurry from motion or too dark to be of any use. this 2.8 allows for amazing low light shots with fast appertures. this is now my go to lens and my photos are 100% better as a result. I strongly recommend this lens as a part of any SERIOUS photographers kit. thank you nikon for building it and thank you Henrys for the advice...

  • Amazing Lens

  • November 05, 2011
  • By: Greg

The Nikon AF-S 24-70 f2.8 was my very first purchase of a Nikon AF lens and my very first Nikon zoom lens. I had my D300-S for several months before I purchased any lens for it. For the first few months I used my old Nikon Series E 50mm f1.8 and 100mm f2.8 lenses. (Slow to focus, but they worked beautifully.) The day after I purchased the 24-70 I went to a family wedding. I literally took the lens out of the box, snapped it onto the D300-S and started shooting. What can I say? I have used Nikon and Nikkor lenses for years and loved them all, but this lens is stunning. Focus was fast and tack sharp even in dim light. The f2.8 also allowed me to get shots that others couldn't. I'm trying to think of negative things about the lens and can't think of anything that would convince me not to buy this lens. Price? No. It is worth every penny. You truly get what you pay for. Weight? Obviously it is heavier than other lenses but it is actually a very well balanced lens on the camera and it handles very well. The only draw back I can think of is that I had to get over trying to shoot everything at f2.8. (I paid for f2.8 and I was going to use it.) Shooting pictures at f2.8 of a young child who found it very hard to sit still can prove to be very challenging.

  • WISE INVESTMENT

Just picked up my new Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens for my D300 and am thrilled with it! I have been using and love my Nikon 70-200mm for powersports action photography (offroad vehicles and snowmobiles), which has allowed me to get great shots while staying at a distance from my subject, however I've found times where it would be advantageous to get in closer to the action or bring in more environment around my subject and in tight trail situations, its tough with the 70-200 - plus its a tank! My new 24-70 provides the opportunity to creatively integrate the surrounding environment into my photos and get in tight enough to be part of the action. Plus, the images are TACK SHARP! My immediate impression when I first mounted this lens to my camera was how light it felt in my hands especially compared to the gi-normous 70-200. This lens does NOT feature Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction), however I personally have not felt I needed the additional stabilization with this lens the way I have on my 70-200. I can move around in the field to get a wider variety of shots without experiencing arm fatigue and feel confident that my photos will turn out as clear and crisp as ice-cold 7-Up. NOTE: The HB-40 lens hood is a whopper and I have experienced shadowing while using my in-camera flash (which isn't too often). Solution, either don't use the hood or invest in a sweet SB-900 to light up your shots...or do both, but that's another review. I did not find this lens to be over-priced especially when I see how great my images turn out. Nikon's 24-70 is hands-down the best investment in my camera bag.

  • Excellent Lens

  • November 24, 2014
  • By: fotomacher.ca

I am shooting with D300s and D700 bodies. I have owned this lens for 3 years and not regretted my purchase for a nanosecond. I had the Nikkor 28-70mm AF-D previously and was blown away by the improvement in IQ and focus. Tack sharp is a cliche, however this lens really is. I shoot with only Nikkor glass and this lens is as good as lenses can possibly be. Build quality is phenomenal. Although not inobtrusive, it is a go-to lens for street photog in almost any light. On a DX body you can use it for portraits with "pizzazz".

  • Incredible Lens

  • By: Mark

Rarely ever leave it at home, great lens. Bought this first while I still had a D300 and have since moved up to the D800 - it of course works incredibly on both cameras. Yes it is a heavy lens however the image quality more than makes up for that. It certainly outperforms the other lenses of the same focal range.

  • An amazing wedding photography lens

  • April 06, 2014
  • By: William

This lens is a must for any wedding photographer. I've had mine for 4 years now, and it's still going strong. It's sharp, and consistently delivers! Whether you are considering a new career, or just looking for the perfect universal lens, this one should be the first on your wish list!

  • The middle sister of the Trinity

  • By: Brian

This is not a light lens. I found a black rapid shoulder strap was a necessity when this is on my camera. The balance on a D600 is good but improved with a battery grip. That said, I took it to Havana recently and was quite pleased with it's versatility for street photography. It is sharp, sharp, sharp and the pictures I took are exactly what I was looking for. Mind you, it does attract attention. It's also good for indoor events where flash is forbidden. I thought I would keep my much lighter D90 with a 18-200mm DX lens for travel, but can't do it. There is simply no comparison between the two. This lens is on my Camera to stay.

  • It's always mounted on the camera.

This is a superb lens. I got a good copy that is very sharp and produces full frame images that have much more presence and lifelike presentation than lesser optics. This lens is neither light nor small but to my mind it's the lens I trust for images that matter.

  • Heavy but good

  • December 24, 2012
  • By: Ron

I have used this lens for travel. There is no question that this is a heavy lens and can be a bit intimidating. However, the pictures I get from it are excellent. It is on my D700 most of the time. Certainly not a cheap lens but I have never regretted spending the money on this lens.

  • Control, build, speed

  • August 08, 2012
  • By: Blake Zimmerman

This lens gives you just about everything you want in a midrange zoom. East to use control with a wide and fast aperture. I've done night and low light shots with no issues. The build is second to none. Hell the lens weighs more than my camera, but it's appreciated as you know it's not going to break. The lens hood is durable as well, and has a nice locking mechanism built into it. Yes this lens is expensive, but the amount of control it gives during low light or to have the shallow depth of field, catching even a moving subject, is something lower end lenses just can't do.

  • The workhorse

  • By: Jason Hynes

This lens is a legendary workhorse. An absolute must have lens for any Photography enthusiast. Amazingly sharp form corner to corner, focusing is fast and silent. The weather sealing and robust build quality do make this lens a bit heavy but it is worth it. 77mm filter thread is standard on a lens of this calibre. you will never know how you did without, I know I don't. Cheers

  • Professional Design throughout

I just traded in my Nikon 24-120mm F4. After using the 24-120mm, I found the lack of depth to be a bit disappointing, although the lens is great. This just completely blew me away. It gives me that useful range for a variety of closeups, low light shooting just got a lot easier, and the size isn't that much different. I do miss the extra zoom a bit, but I'm saving for the 70-200mm anyways. If you're looking for something for portraits, or any circumstance you can get fairly close to your subject, this is perfect. Amazing construction, super fast. Just remember, this lens is for the pro and advanced amateurs who know how to use the camera to it's full extent. The prosumer who just wants to do vacation pics should do more research into what suits them best, but for pro's, this is fantastic.

  • Amazing on a D90

  • April 28, 2012
  • By: Michael

I own a D90 and this was my first Pro Lens. What a piece of glass. Definitely worth the price. It's sharp!! A lot of people will complain that it's heavy and big but what would else would you expect from metal and glass? It feels professional. It definitely is heavier than my D90 body, which made it feel heavier towards the front when I was holding it for the first time, but that feeling went away once I start using it. One advantage I actually enjoy about having this lens on a cropped sensor body is it turns it into a decent portrait lens because it converts to a 36-105mm focal length. And, the constant f2.8 aperture is definitely great for low light photography if you don't like using a flash. I love this lens. I definitely recommend it if you're looking for an amazing standard zoom and not worried about cost. It's also future proof if you own a cropped sensor body want to jump up to a full frame camera.

  • Value for money? Not for me. I cannot justify the price.

  • July 08, 2010
  • By: rdp

Very heavy, makes carrying your camera around less and less desirable with every day that passes. I had people commenting on the fact that they felt intimidated by the size of the lens. Picture quality is great, but (at least my copy) does not feel as ?stellar? as other reviews made me to expect. I cannot see any notable difference in the pictures when compared to lenses that cost a fifth of what this one costs, enlarged to 100 percent side by side in LightRoom when the same body is used. For me the ?value for money? just isn?t there, especially in this economy. Do yourself a favor and stick to a DX body and lenses between $200 and $600. Nothing wrong there and no one will notice the difference in the photos. Just get out there and take pictures rather than spending all your money on overpriced equipment and be left with no money to travel.
