Very sharp. Sharper and more contrast than Nikkor 35mm f2.8 AIS, so more fine detail shows more clearly. Big size, but lightweight.

I have been trying to decide between the 35 f2 and the f1.4 for almost a year. The f1.4 is gorgeous and out of my budget, the f2 is great but loud and distracting while shooting a quiet event like a wedding where you want to be like a fly on the wall getting those moments. This came out exactly when I was looking for a lens at this focal length for my D700 and so i picked one up right away. There is a slight vignetting in the corners that is easy to corret in LR or PS by using the 35mm 1.8 DX lens correction. It is plasticy where it can be and metally where it needs to be, which makes it feel a bit cheap compared to the old all metal monsters Nikon used to put out. All in all this lens is great. Lightweight, fast, clear and it was about time. This lens completes the FX line of f1.8G prime lenses. The only reason I gave this a 4 star was that: it has noticeable vignetting, a little bit of chromatic abberation and could have been clearer in the corners for the price Nikon is asking. If you have an FX camera, get this lens, it is totally worth it.
