Excellent Affordable Kit
July 30, 2014
This is an excellent, affordable kit for the budget DSLR filmmaker. It features a shoulder rig, follow focus, and matte box. You can buy these items separately (from any brand as it uses standard 15mm rods), but buying them together saves some cash.
The shoulder rig is light, yet sturdy. The handles are decently comfortable. The locks are a bit hard to tighten and loosen, and they have to be REALLY tight to keep the rig steady.
The follow focus attaches easily and works with lenses with 43-77mm filter sizes, which is the vast majority of DSLR lenses. It is very smooth and precise and features a white-board type material on the side that you can write on for setting precise focus points to switch between.
The matte box is good, though it is the cheapest feeling part of the kit. I used a demo at the store and I found the top flap kept falling down. Hopefully that doesn't happen to mine, though it is quite cheap to replace the whole box system.
The entire system is easy to handle and has made a huge difference in my filming. It keeps my Canon 5D MKIII steady, whether it's with my 17-40L or Sigma 35mm lens. I have not tried it with my 70-200L - I worried that might be too much weight and the matte won't really fit well - but that's not a lens I plan to use with a shoulder rig anyways - that's what a tripod is for!
Great system for very little money. Highly recommended.
