  • It really is worth the money!

With some financial trepidation, I explored the internet reviews of this lens and decided to buy it in the late fall of 2013. I am not disappointed!! On a photo shoot in Cuba, it performed superbly in capturing birds and para-sailers. Indoors, in large rooms, it was quite good when one was far enough away that an f2.8 200mm was not feasible. However, where the 80-400mm has been spectacular has been for outdoor wildlife (especially bird) photography, outdoor sports photography, and for sports photography in well lit indoor settings, such as for professional hockey. Its autofocus is very impressive. As an example, for bird photography it can cut through the twigs and branches to capture images that otherwise would have required manual focussing. You will not regret buying this lens.

  • Costly but a great lens

The price was a bit intimidating but after the initial sticker shock, the value of the lens became apparent. Optically the lens is great. The 4 stop stabilization permits successful hand held shots at shutter speeds far slower than I expected. In all honesty, I've only been using the lens for a few weeks but I am very impressed and satisfied so far. On the negative side, it is quite heavy.

After having used the original version for many years I needed a better lense to pair with my Nikon D7200. Took the plunge and bought one last week, have shot with it several times and am quite happy with the results. Autofocus is very fast and I have many more keeper shots than ever before. Check the manual that comes with it as there are a couple of settings worth noting especially if you shoot fast moving subjects. Its a little heavier than my old setup so attach one to your body of choice in the store as you may need a monopod. If your looking for good carry around nature shooting type lense this is it. Only reason for a 4 is the weight, mind you its not that bad just something to note when doing a review.
