  • 16.05 MP Digital Camera
  • Live MOS Sensor
  • Splash / Dustproof Design
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • 16.05-megapixel Live MOS sensor:
  • Wide dynamic range and high sensitivity image recording
  • Panasonic focused on the following three areas: (1) minimizing noise in the sensor, (2) preventing sensor noise from entering the output signal, and (3) preventing noise from entering the signal processing circuit, power supply line and grounding line
  • To reduce noise, it is also important to design the power supply wiring and the signal wiring connected to the engine to be as close to the same length as possible. These measures not only suppress noise but also help to improve processing speed
  • Low-pass Filter:
  • Low-pass filter on the surface of the Live MOS Sensor
  • The filter optimizes the conventionally conflicting effects of increasing resolution while suppressing moire
  • The unwanted data that leads to moire and false color is effectively eliminated while maintaining high resolution
  • ISO 12800 / Extended ISO25600:
  • Standard sensitivity is from ISO200 to ISO12800, but you can set sensitivity to ISO125 or ISO25600 by using an extension function
  • Venus Engine:
  • Refined to achieve superior noise reduction. With a combination of 3DNR and MNR, both bright area and dark area are faithfully reproduced with minimum noise across the entire focusing range in high sensitivity image recording
  • 3DNR:
  • 3D Noise Reduction (3DNR) detects smooth part and edge part of a picture and adjust the strength of noise reduction - stronger to the smooth part and milder to the edge part to maintain the descriptiveness
  • Resolution is prioritized at edge area + Noise reduction is prioritized in soft gradation area
  • MNR:
  • Multi-process Noise Reduction (MNR) applies optimum noise reduction according to the brightness of the part of the image
  • Images recorded in low-lit situations are now dramatically clear
  • High frequency noise in the dark part is suppressed + Low frequency noise in the light part is suppressed
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range):
  • To cope with the extreme bright and dark contrast that you get, for example, with backlighting, consecutive photos are taken with different exposure levels and overlapped
  • Blown highlights and blocked shadows are then deleted and a single photo is composed
  • All processing is done in the background, so you can take your next shot without having to wait, ensuring that you don't miss a photo opportunity
  • Electronic Shutter Function:
  • Both the front and rear curtains in the DMC-GH3's shutter system are driven electronically for vibration-free operation
  • This ensures crisp still-life images and landscapes with no pixel shifting
  • Shutter Delay Function:
  • To reduce the effect of hand-shake, the shutter is released after a specified time (8, 4, 2 or 1 sec) has passed
  • ISO Setting in 1/3 EV Steps:
  • When the ISO sensitivity step is set to 1/3 EV, the number of ISO sensitivity setting options increases, allowing finer adjustment and a higher level of image quality
  • ISO Limit Set:
  • The maximum sensitivity setting is applied to the Intelligent ISO Control and ISO AUTO functions
  • This ensures that you'll get the level of image quality you want by letting you set your own limit for ISO sensitivity
  • Long Shutter Noise Reduction:
  • The camera automatically removes noise generated when taking photos at slow shutter speeds, such as nighttime shooting, always giving you beautiful images
  • Built-in Flash:
  • GN12 equivalent (ISO 100 / m)
  • GN17 equivalent (ISO 200 / m)
  • View angle of 24mm lens covered (35mm camera equivalent)
  • Synchronization for flash dimming and exposure compensation
  • Manual flash output adjustment
  • In addition to improving the DMC-GH3's built-in flash performance, a flash synchro socket and wireless control compatibility expand possibilities for using an external flash as well
  • Built-in Wi-Fi:
  • Wi-Fi function lets you use your smartphone or tablet to make settings and press the shutter button remotely
  • The auto backup function is handy for automatically backing up photos onto a smartphone or tablet
  • Light Speed AF:Features ultra-high-speed Light Speed AF makes it possible to capture even the fast-moving subject clearly
  • Not only the accuracy but also the speed excels by far than the high-end DSLRs with phase-difference AF with the advanced contrast AF system of the DMC-GH3
  • The camera and the lens exchange the digital signal at max. 240 fps to minimize the time to focus
  • Together with the quick start-up and short release time lag, the DMC-GH3 never lets photographers miss fleeting shooting opportunities.
  • Contrast AF:
  • Contrast AF of the DMC-GH3 boasts higher accuracy even in shooting at small F value
  • The phase-difference AF system is susceptible to mechanical margin of error
  • However, in the contrast AF system, focusing is controlled by the image sensor so that no mechanical margin of error occurs to achieve precise focusing
  • 6 fps Burst Shooting with 16.05 MP Full-Resolution:
  • DMC-GH3 captures moving subject clearly with the burst shooting at 6 fps in full resolution (max. 18 consecutive shots of RAW+JPEG)
  • It is great for capturing fast subject motion, such as sports scenes or birds in flight
  • You can take a series of shots, then choose the ones you like the best and delete the rest
  • 20 fps High-speed Burst shooting:
  • Even higher-speed burst shooting is possible with the DMC-GH3 when the electronic shutter is used
  • Full HD Progressive:
  • The DMC-GH3 gives you 1920 x 1080 60p [NTSC] / 50p [PAL] full HD recording
  • Progressive scanning records every frame, so the amount of data contained is twice that of interlace scanning, and the images have extremely high definition
  • 24p Video Recording:
  • In addition to 60p (NTSC) / 50p (PAL) operation, you can freely set the frame rate to 30p (NTSC) 25p (PAL) or 24p according to your intended use
  • 72 Mbps (All-Intra) / 50Mbps (IPB):
  • DMC-GH3 is capable of recording ultra high bitrate video recorded at 72 Mbps (ALL-Intra) or 50 Mbps (IPB)
  • And it is capable of recording continuously for an unlimited time
  • Seamless File Generation:
  • When recording the video in MOV, AVCHD Progressive and AVCHD, the DMC-GH3 automatically generates multiple seamless files for continuous recording
  • During playback, the AVCHD Progressive / AVCHD files are reproduced with seamless, interruption-free continuity
  • 3.0-inch Free-angle OLED Rear Monitor:
  • 3.0-inch 614K-dot free-angle OLED rear monitor offers approx. 100% of field of view. This allows detailed settings, framing and focusing.
  • Still Image Recording with 12 MP High Resolution:
  • While shooting an HD video, simply press / touch the shutter button and the camera will shoot a photo with 12-megapixel high resolution as it continues to record your video
  • This makes sure that you don't miss those decisive moments with either photos or videos, or both
  • Magnesium Alloy Full Diecast Frame:
  • DMC-GH3 is the first in the LUMIX G series to use a magnesium alloy frame
  • Its lightweight yet durable body brings ruggedness to the compact size of the digital single lens mirrorless camera to provide flexible shooting virtually anywhere
  • Splash / Dustproof Design:
  • Achieved by tightly sealing the joints and control components of the body
  • In particular, careful attention was given to the popup flash. To prevent vignetting caused by the lens, the popup flash incorporates a sliding mechanism that raises the flash to its operating position. The DMC-GH3 has taken thorough measures to prevent the entry of dust and water from this section
  • Dust Reduction System:
  • To eliminate dust and other foreign matter that might otherwise enter the camera when changing lenses, SSWF (Super Sonic-Wave Filter) that vibrates approximately 80,000 times / second is mounted between the low-pass filter and the shutter
  • Each time the power is turned on, the filter oscillates the sensor surface to automatically remove dust and other particles
  • LVF:
  • High-precision, high-speed OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display
  • Increasing the resolution of display area to 1,744K-dot equivalent, the 16:9 Wide Screen LVF boasts approx.1.34x / 0.67x (35mm camera equiv.) magnification and 100% field of view and eyepoint of approximately 21 mm
  • Touch Pad Af:
  • Touch Pad function enables using both LVF and monitor simultaneously to encourage more intuitive shooting
  • Eye Sensor AF:
  • Automatically starts focusing when you look into the LVF to capture the spur-of-the-moment

  • Super Value for a pro body mirrorless.

  • June 03, 2014
  • By: Bharat

Bought this as a kit with the Pano 12-35mm. Great combo for travelling around. Compact size. Amazing video quality. Camera can be customized in so many ways. I bought this to mainly do timelapse and video and have not been disappointed. The weather sealing worked great on it's first trip to Iceland where it encountered snow, rain, blowing sand and cold temps. No problems at all. The dynamic range of the camera is as claimed - lots of latitude when shooting in RAW. Battery life has been great. Versatile video modes make it great for doing special effects with slow and fast motion. I did add an external mike for video use. The wireless features work great on my smartphone and iPad. A year later and the camera has held up well. This was my first mirrorless camera and if it wasn't for the lack of focus peaking and 4K video, I wouldn't be upgrading to the GH4.
