  • Surpassed My Expectations!

  • April 25, 2015

I'm writing this review from the stand point of having been a Canon Rebel Xsi APS-C user for the last 8 years and wanting to upgrade to a full frame camera. I looked at the Sony Alpha mirrorless and Nikon make a long story short I came back to Canon and ordered this one along with the 16-35mm 2.8 L lens. I'm really glad I did! I know comparing an entry level camera such as the Xsi to the 6D is like comparing apples to oranges but anyone wanting to upgrade shouldn't think twice about getting this camera. The feel of it alone in your hand is awesome...the function buttons are laid out well and like others have said is intuitive. Most of the Xsi's settings were buried in menus. I'm not a pro so I can't tell you about the technical aspects but I will tell you that the images I've taken with this camera and lens are of great quality, I was amazed by the difference, but I guess I was still stuck in the last decade not compensating for the changes and advancements in technology! Wifi was no trouble to set up, along with a download and install of the Canon EOS Remote app (available from Google Play), a must have if you use an IPhone or Smartphone which lets you operate the 6D from your phone! I haven't tested the GPS feature yet... If you decide to go with the 6D and you have some money left over make sure you get the "nifty fifty" - 50mm 1.8 II Canon lens (est. $120 - don't let the price fool you!), BG-E13 battery grip and extra battery. My last word I'll reserve for Henry's (and Steve at the Barrie location) - you went above and beyond in assisting me, Thank You so much!

  • Delighted !

I'd been waiting to move up to a Full Frame body and pulled the trigger this XMas with the 6D & 24-105mm kit... I already have a 2.8 24-70. Low light performance on this camera is outstanding and very usable. Wifi is a wonderful feature - was at a party and had linked up with my iPad which I left on the coffee table and went off shooting... all the pics just flow to the IOS (or Android) device for all to enjoy... they can email shots they want to themselves rather than asking me to do it ! Menu system is very easy to figure out and navigate quickly. Quality of the images is light years ahead of what I was experiencing with my Cropped sensor camera. AF system is very fast... almost no "do-overs"... if running both the wifi & the GPS, it will drain your battery faster, so a 2nd LPE6 is worth considering. very pleased with my purchase.

  • Incredible Camera

This camera provides superb ISO performance and image quality. The 24-105 lens is also very sharp and accurate and a joy to use. The WiFi functionality is a great bonus, and the eos remote app which utilizes this feature allows full remote control of the camera, for sure a great feature. The camera feels great to hold, although light, it feels very sturdy and the grip is very comfortable. The auto-focus, although only 11 points focuses very fast and without difficulty, even in very dark environments. Menus are easy to navigate and the button layout is ergonomic. Canon really has impressed me with this great full frame SLR.

  • Some Honest Opinions

  • November 27, 2014
  • By: Peter

This review is my opinion about some basic features of the camera and the camera and lens performance. I recommend supplementing any review and research by watching various online videos regarding this camera, especially those which compare the 6D to the 70D/MkII/MkIII, etc. The Camera: Menus very easy to use and options are thorough. The 'info' button can be pressed on many menu options to provide more information which is nice for the novice user. I find buttons are in very well-placed positions and become very easy to memorize where they are all over the camera. Ergonomics of the camera are great, although I wish the body was a little bit bigger. I have medium sized male hands. Difficult to take pictures with one hand - hard to grip and press shutter at the same time, especially with heavy-ish lens such as the 24-105L. Auto-focus system is very fast and accurate, especially center point, however 11 AF points and only one cross-type is archaic technology in terms of any newer DSLRs nowadays. Great low-light focus performance. FPS - I was a little disappointed in only getting 4.5 frames per second, but this is not considered a sports camera. 4.5 fps still suits most of my needs, but I would have been more satisfied with 6-10. I find the battery lasts a long time and I frequently find myself surprised after a few hours of shooting that there is still lots of power left. WiFi is a neat feature but quite difficult to set up and sync with a device - took me about 10 minutes and I consider myself tech savvy. Follow the instructions closely. In camera RAW to JPEG processing is very easy to use and useful when you, let's say, want to quickly edit a picture and give it to a friend without having to fool around with computer software. It is my first time owning a full-frame sensor camera (and any DSLR for that matter) but I am very satisfied with the noise and image performance. As you know you do not get that extra focal length that you would with a cropped sensor, but the ISO, depth of field, and image quality is just amazing. I still shoot confidently at ISO 3200, although a slight reduction in image quality is noticed at this ISO after RAW processing and noise reduction. ISO 1600 is sharp. Images still very usable at ISO 6400. Overall I am very satisfied with the camera, although some features such as FPS and auto-focus points falls short of today's DSLR standards. The Lens: I have mixed feelings about this lens. When tack-sharp, this lens is great and produces very sharp images with very good colour representations. Depth of field is smooth and soft. Quality at F4 is a bit disappointing. This lens excels at F8-F11. Vignetting very noticeable at F4-F8 but is easily corrected with software. Distortion very noticeable at both ends (28 and 105mm) but is easily corrected with software. 'Macro' qualities of the lens are quite impressive, although this is not a true macro lens. Some image quality is lost (at least in my lens) at 105mm. The sweet spot for the lens is something like 55mm and anywhere between F8-F13. Where I have issues is I find that occasionally shots seem out of focus. Perhaps it is my skill level, but even with tripod and good light and a non-moving subject I still find the image sharpness is not as high as I had thought it was going to be. Many images don't seem tack-sharp. I have micro adjusted the focus I believe to +4 which seemed to help a bit. If you read reviews about this lens some people have issues with needing to micro adjust this lens or even send it away for service because of image issues. I think I have one of those lens with a slight image issue. I have read other reviews where people can easily crop their picture to 100% and still get very usable images, however I find that this is rarely so. I am going to send the lens away to Canon over the holidays to see if anything can be done (I think it's only $15 and 6 weeks of wait time). I wish the lens had a lens lock for various focal lengths. When shooting with the lens pointing at the ground the lens does not stay in the desired focal length and rather the focal length creeps ever upwards. Also, with carrying the body and lens on your shoulder the lens tends to creep outwards to about 45mm. The focus ring is very smooth and provides enough resistance. The lens is very quick to focus and the USM is silent. Image stabilization is very nice albeit quite loud. It emits a grinding-type noise that typically is not an issue unless you are shooting videos wherein the sound becomes very loud during video as it is easily picked up by the internal camera mics. I bought a Voeloon V760 external flash from Henry's. Awesome price ($249.99) for what I believe is a great flash. This flash is very comparable to the Canon 600EX at less than half the price. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend this lens and camera to landscape, portrait, some nature photography, and low-light and wedding photography. Other cameras (7D MkII) are more suitable for sports and birds-in-flight photography and may suit your needs more.

  • A very nice full frame option

If I could give 4.5 stars I would. 6D - I get great results from this camera. The files look great, and stand up to manipulation well. I like the qualities of the noise, it is much more organic than sensors of the past, with virtually no color noise until ISO gets very high. I feel comfortable shooting anything up to an ISO of 6400, and still don't have to nail exposure to get a great image that I can manipulate if I choose to. I feel like the feature set is pretty complete for anyone that isn't shooting fast moving subjects often. 24-105mm lens - I like this lens a lot. It suits most of my needs for a versatile everyday zoom. I just wish it performed slightly better at 24mm where I love to shoot often. I have hard vignetting in two of the corners, and the distortion causes some problems in the corners of the image when corrected.
