  • High Quality Optical Glass
  • 2 to 8 stops of Light Control
  • Thin Profile Ring: 9mm
  • Padded Black Nylon Pouch
  • Unique, versatile and flexible tool, affording you the convenience of using several Neutral Density filters all in one
  • Primarily used as a photographic tool for controlling depth of field and exposure, the Variable ND is being sought in the video market as well because it is fast, easy to use, small, lightweight, and does not require additional accessories such as a matte box
  • Wider outer optic to help reduce vignetting at wide angles
  • Made with high quality optical glass using Tiffen's ColorCore technology
  • Variable ND Filter:
  • Neutral density filters reduce the amount of light going through the lens into your camera
  • By reducing the light you are able to achieve the following:
  • Allows the use of slow shutter speeds, with high speed films or digital cameras, to record movement/image blur in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds or any fast moving subject
  • Gives you full control over your depth of field. You are able to decrease depth of field by using wider apertures, which helps separate subjects from their background (subject matter in focus while your background is blurred)
  • Allows you to shoot high speed film (above ISO 400) in bright outdoor situations by reducing effective ISO
  • Enables cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
  • Rotate until you reach your desired effect and shoot. It allows you to have continuous control over the amount of light coming through your lens in an approximate range of 2 (ND 0.6) to 8 (ND 2.4) stops - while maintaining the integrity of your image

  • Extra creamy movement

When I coach students on long exposures of falls, rapids or white water, one of the desired outcomes is really creamy water. Getting this means very slow shutter speeds and even with low ISO settings and small apertures, the shutter speed you get may not be slow enough for the look you want. A variable neutral density filter while potentially expensive is a great solution. You can get two stops with just a good quality polarizer but for real slowdown you need more stops, and stacking a bunch of filters on top of each other is a horrible optical compromise. I have tried the inexpensive variables and they are mostly crap. At deeper densities, they become muddy, cause colour shifts and turn into moire factories. The experience can be so lousy that it can turn people right off. The Tiffen line is a great choice. It's cost-effective, and certainly less expensive than the superb Heliopan line. I've used the Tiffen extensively and recommend it highly. The only thing I would like to see are the stops as found on the Heliopan, although the difference of $170 more doesn't work for me. Tiffen Variables come in all the popular sizes plus 82mm to fit the full frame ultrawides. Construction is great and image quality is awesome.
