Fantastic DX format Prime
December 09, 2014
I have been using this lens for a long time. It's my go-to lens for just about everything that doesn't inherently require a tele and probably the best budget Nikkor portrait lens available natively for the compact DX format. (Yes, I prefer it over the f1.8 and f1.4 50's, which are all formatted for full frame cameras. On a compact sensor with a 1.5x crop factor, those "nifty 50's" are the equivalent of nifty 75's) It's macro abilities are astounding (used it to photograph a rarely spotted "pseudoscorpion" thats a little less than 1mm in length, and this lens made it look positively ferocious) if I have any complaints it's that it tends to vignette slightly when focused at infinity (The front lens element is retracted deep into the housing) and at f2.8 it's Bokeh, while deep, isn't jaw dropping. (For portraiture, the model is the subject, not the Bokeh. Make him/her look fantastic and use the soft background focus to separate the subject from the background. I've never had less than spectacular results with this lens, even at f2.8)
