  • Better than the "nifty-fifty"

  • November 29, 2011
  • By: Isagani

Got this lens from Oakville location. This is my second best purchase next to the D7000. This lens isn't just an amazing macro lens but also an excellent portrait lens. Super sharp, vivid and crisp images. I also have a 50mm f1.8 D and a 17-50 fast lens but I like using this lens better. It's mounted to my DSLR body 85% of the time. Small but very useful lens whether you are 2" or 2 yards away from the subject. Well lit or low lit.

  • Fantastic DX format Prime

I have been using this lens for a long time. It's my go-to lens for just about everything that doesn't inherently require a tele and probably the best budget Nikkor portrait lens available natively for the compact DX format. (Yes, I prefer it over the f1.8 and f1.4 50's, which are all formatted for full frame cameras. On a compact sensor with a 1.5x crop factor, those "nifty 50's" are the equivalent of nifty 75's) It's macro abilities are astounding (used it to photograph a rarely spotted "pseudoscorpion" thats a little less than 1mm in length, and this lens made it look positively ferocious) if I have any complaints it's that it tends to vignette slightly when focused at infinity (The front lens element is retracted deep into the housing) and at f2.8 it's Bokeh, while deep, isn't jaw dropping. (For portraiture, the model is the subject, not the Bokeh. Make him/her look fantastic and use the soft background focus to separate the subject from the background. I've never had less than spectacular results with this lens, even at f2.8)

  • Awsome Lens

  • March 09, 2012
  • By: Robert

Bought this lens a couple of months and have rarely taken it off my camera. I have used it for all sorts of shooting from extreme closeups to some interesting landscape shots. The lens is priced as low budget but it performs spectacularily. This is one of the best things I have purchased for my camera.

Special thanks to the Barrie staff for their expertise and help.

  • Truly excellent lens

This is a great lens in Nikon DX range. It's an unassuming f2.8 lens, small and light but has terrific image quality, excellent contrast and resolution across the width of the frame and apertures. Distortion - has none. It makes a good "normal" lens at the equivalent of 60mm in FX speak. With f2.8 on DX and 60mm focal range, you can isolate the foreground. You can't deny physics though. To get a fast enough, small, light, quality lens, you do so with a short focal length. That means that for macro photography, you are very close to your subject. It also means that you will have a deeper depth of field at the same aperture as longer lens. Depending on what you like to shoot, that may be limiting or advantageous for you. Positives: small, light, sharp, contrasty, and distortion-free, more depth of field, excellent value. Negatives: Not that fast, no VR feature, bigger depth of field. This is a great lens. Get in or out and shoot!

  • Nikon Macro Lens

  • August 01, 2013

It's only been one day, but I am impressed with it so far. I can't compare with other macros because it is the first that I have had. The only problem is not with the lens, but with the lens hood. If it can lock on, then I have yet to figure out how. But, that has nothing to do with the lens.
