  • Almost as good as your eye

I use this splendid lens with my Nikon D5100. The clarity and focus in the shots are fantastic. It's fast; it's light weight; it's small for easy storage; it's design is slick and oh so beautiful, as well as the bokeh; and the price "ain't too bad". And it locks on tight to the camera body, which always gives me a comforting feeling. I tried a friend's f/1.8D first and loved it, so I went and got this f/1.8G. The big difference between D and G is that the D has no focal motor built inside while the G does. This means that the D's autofocus can be used in some cameras while the G's autofocus can be used in all. Beginner cameras like the D5100 don't have a motor built in so they require the lens to have it. This is an important aspect of the lens you want to consider. I deliberated on this for a while. I bought the lens for the purpose of photographing bands playing in bar-like venues (ie. low light conditions). The shots turned out great! I should mention, 50mm closest matches the human eye. At least for full frame sensors; crop sensor cameras seem to require 40mm, but it's really up to you. Portrait lenses start from the 50mms. I'm mentioning this because there are plenty of prime lenses out there, perhaps this bit of knowledge will be useful :] If you get this lens, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

  • Simply amazing

The greatest little lens you can buy. Of all the "nifty fifties" out there this is absolutely the best. With the addition of the aspherical lens element, Nikon has taken this 50mm 1.8 to the next level. The picture quality is breathtaking, focusing is lightening quick. The bokeh is unreal, wide open at 1.8 the background doesn't even exist anymore. Would make a great portrait lens, great addition to any kit professional or hobbyist. 58mm filter thread is convenient, lens hood is included as well as a lens pouch for storage. This is simply the most amazing lens for the money you will find. Highly recommended, cheers

  • Like a human eye and bright!

This is my first non-kit lens without a zoom function. I bought this for two reasons. I wanted a lens to challenge me without a zoom to use my eye, and one that I could use in low light settings. The f/1.8 is neat for depth of field and is many times brighter than my kit lens 18-55mm. I'm really excited about this and so far I feel it will be my go-to for most applications. Get it! It's cool!

  • I'm Impressed

This lens is great for the price. I bought this for my d3100. I debated between buying this lens or the 55-200 to compliment my 18-55. I am glad I chose this one. Its a great portrait lens on my dx camera.

  • Can't seem to put it down!

All I can say is wow. After hearing people rave about this lens forever, I decided that it would be a good addition to my collection - and boy was I right. The awesome thing about this lens is that fact that it is 50mm - the closest focal distance to the human eye. There-for, it sees almost what you see. Because of the compact design, the 50mm 1.8 G is very versatile, along with the included lens hood, you can shoot in just about any conditions. The good sized tactile white dot is perfect for mounting in low light. Comes with a lens bag (that will never be used by me) and a 5 year Nikon warranty.

  • Stellar Aperture

  • January 31, 2012
  • By: Nicole

This is the first lens I purchased for my camera. As a fine-art photographer I was looking for something that had a wide range of aperture and a tight focal length. I was happy that this model was less expensive than the similar f/1.4 while still performing fantastically. The auto-focus is exceptional and hasn't given me problems. The physical lens is easy to put on and take off because the white placing dot is large and elevated slightly off the lens. I always get breathtaking images when I use this!

  • Awesome Portrait Lens

  • December 30, 2011
  • By: SC

Although no longer a normal focal length on crop sensor cameras, it serves as an awesome portrait lens. The bokeh is much better than the older D version, less prone to flare and ghosting, and focusing is much quieter. Build quality is more than a step up from its predecessor, with good plastics, and weather sealing gasket. Although the price is more than the D, I find it totally worth the difference!

  • Nifty Fifty

A must have lens. Very similar to the sharpness of the 1.8D but with more accurate focusing thanks to the SWM (specifically @ 1.8). When a protector filter is attached all external moving parts are effectively sealed from water and dust. The included hood is a nice addition over the 1.8D. The bokeh is a little smoother than the 1.8 but lacks the distinctive 7 point polygonal highlights. The only con of this new 50 is a lack of infinity hard stop.

  • Fantastic!

This lens should be in every bag! Light, small, extremely good quality even wide open. I shoot for a newspaper and do most of my work with (DX) zoom lenses, but for concerts or any performances on stage this lens is perfect, the quality is outstanding. A must have when you want to work with natural light, for street photography or for portraits. It's very affordable and small and light enough to just drop it in you bag, get it today!

  • Popular Focal Length

  • May 24, 2014

I recomend this lens as a fist purchase for anyone making the jump from cropped to full frame photography. This is an FX lens so if you are rocking a cropped DX sensor then this is a great portrait lens although there are better DX portrait lenses for less money. This lens is inexpensive compared to most FX lenses. This lens is quiet. This lens is tack sharp on my D700 stopped down just a bit. I use this lens to take my detail shots at weddings and events. I use my 35mm for PJ type event shots and my 85mm for portraits. But if I could have only one focal length I would get this lens.

  • Nikon 50mm G lens

  • February 15, 2014
  • By: Sosep

A classic 50mm is a lens that every photographer should own. The 50mm f/1.8G from Nikon is an incredibly sharp prime lens. Also, the Silent wave motor is very fast, accurate and VERY silent! The feel of the lens is very nice in the hands with exceptional build quality. The wide aperture is very very nice and produces absolutely wonderful bokeh and is an excellent lens to use in low lights, for portraiture and just simply makes an excellent all around lens.
