  • Super Telephoto Lens
  • Three Image Stabilization Modes
  • Power Focus Mode
  • Filter Size: 52mm Drop-In
  • Fluorite optics that deliver sharper images with less chromatic aberration
  • Lighter weight thanks to magnesium and titanium construction elements
  • Because image stabilization technology in super telephoto lenses may inadvertently over-compensate and interfere with composing and framing distant or moving subjects, the EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM includes an advanced third Image Stabilization mode (Mode 3) that activates IS only when the shutter button is fully pressed. This allows users to pan fast-moving subjects and then activate IS only when it is precisely required
  • Additionally, all three IS modes give the equivalent effect of a shutter speed four stops faster, ideally positioning the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM for professional action photography, from sports to nature
  • Power Focus mode enables smooth focus change when shooting video
  • Buttons and switches are designed for intuitive, deliberate operation
  • Dust and water sealing keeps the EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM functioning flawlessly in even the most challenging environments
  • Specifications:

  • An astonishing piece of equipment

I have been using this lens for bird photography for about 4 months. Previously, I had been using the 300mm f/4.6. In terms of the optics and electronics, this lens is a quantum leap forward in every respect. What you read in the online reviews about the crispness of the image, the autofocus speed, the superior IS functionality, etc., is exactly right. Don't even think about using this lens without a top-quality monopod or a Gimbal head tripod, though; it's just too big and heavy. Transitioning from a smaller lens does take some getting used to, so be patient--not just because it is bigger and heavier, but because the smaller field of view makes target acquisition trickier, and because it has a longer minimum focus distance. You will miss some shots that you might have gotten with a smaller lens. But the shots you do get will be dramatically better!
