An astonishing piece of equipment
September 08, 2012
I have been using this lens for bird photography for about 4 months. Previously, I had been using the 300mm f/4.6. In terms of the optics and electronics, this lens is a quantum leap forward in every respect. What you read in the online reviews about the crispness of the image, the autofocus speed, the superior IS functionality, etc., is exactly right. Don't even think about using this lens without a top-quality monopod or a Gimbal head tripod, though; it's just too big and heavy.
Transitioning from a smaller lens does take some getting used to, so be patient--not just because it is bigger and heavier, but because the smaller field of view makes target acquisition trickier, and because it has a longer minimum focus distance. You will miss some shots that you might have gotten with a smaller lens. But the shots you do get will be dramatically better!
