  • Excellent all-in-one lense

  • September 25, 2012

I purchased this lens as an upgrade to the 18-55mm kit lens. I was originally considering adding the Canon USM IS 75-300mm as a second lens but after a lot of research I decided to go with the Tamron for a few reasons: - to avoid switching lenses - the Canon 75-300 is substantially longer than the Tamron which would make it a little more inconvient to walk with - after some research the picture quality of the Tamron even at wide angle is arguably better than the kit lens and the build quality is much better. My wife uses the camera primarily for photographing our your children both inside and outside of the house. We have both enjoyed playing with the lens. The extreme zoom makes it possible (and a lot of fun) to easily capture pictures on a soccer field. Picture quality is quite good although there is some barrel distortion at wide angle and some slight vignetting at telephoto. The barrel distortion is only slightly worse than the 18-55mm lens though and it is not really noticeable unless you are specifically looking for it. I consider both a reasonable trade off for the flexibility of the lens. I was worried the the focus might be a little slow but I haven't really noticed a problem yet although most of my pictures have been with a reasonable amount of light. One pleasant surprise is that the macro capability of the lens is better than expected. I have been having fun taking pictures of lego toys, flowers, and everything else minature. Overall it is a huge improvement over the kit lense and I really like the ability to take the camera out without having to carry around an extra telephoto lens.

  • Great travel and activity lens

I've owned this lens for about a month and really enjoy using it. It tends to spend a lot of time on my camera and is a sort of jack of all trades. I use it particularity for hiking and climbing where changing lenses is not always possible or practical, and a large range of focal lengths can be especially handy. Advantages: I don't have to change lenses, although I usually carry a 50mm prime along with it. The vibration compensation works very well. When climbing or hiking you don't always have a lot of choices as far as positioning is concerned. I find the huge range of focal length this lens offers helps me capture pictures I probably wouldn't get otherwise. FUN! This lens is a lot of fun to play with. It offers so much in one package, just make sure you don't take it for granted! Disadvantages: It is relatively slow. In practice I have found that I can capture most situations well, with the most difficult being a moving subject in low light. In fact the lens does not excel at moving subjects in general, but it is possible to get good pictures of moving subjects under the right circumstances.

  • Great Lens

Just upgraded to this lens from the two kit lens that came with my canon camera. I have to say that this lens is great upgrade to the 18-55, 55-250 that came with my camera. I have been shooting with it all day and evening. Great shoots and really nice to have all that range in one lens. If you are going in to buy a camera and are considering one with the kit lenses then I would suggest that you try that camera body with this lens before you buy.
