  • Sigma 17-50 great lens

I have a D7000 and I was using the kit lens, this lens is a huge improvement. F2.8, some great shots already. Feels sturdy and focus ring moves smoothly. only downside for me is that sigma lenses rotate in the opposite direction of Nikon lenses, not a big deal. And at this price it is a really good deal (this lens used to be more expensive)

  • Excellent Lens - Great Upgrade

The numbers from DxOMark and opinion from Thom Hogan would suggest that this is the go-to lens for Nikon cropped sensor cameras. I'm shooting with a D3200 and this lens has revealed what the camera and sensor are capable of. Images are sharp and contrasty. The ability to focus a bit closer is quite valuable in the real world when taking garden/flower photos. It means that a macro lens is not used as often. The images are sharp and the OS/VR function is very good. I've been able to hand hold pretty consistently down to 1/10 sec when shooting a bit wider open. Another reviewer mentioned an issue of hit and miss focusing. I may be seeing that every so often but I'm not sure it's not my fault. Too many of the images are spot on to make me question the lens. A highly recommended lens. Whatever idiosyncrasies the lens has are quickly worked out after shooting a few images. Weight and balance are more than acceptable on the smaller D3200 body.

  • great value and performance

I shoot with the D7100 and was looking for a fast mid-range zoom. I didn't want to break the bank on a Nikon or Sigma full frame 2.8 lens, so I decided to pick this one up. So far, the decision has proven to be a good one. The lens is well built, has good optics and with an f2.8 constant aperture, it works well with low light. I'm very happy with this lens and would recommend it to anyone.

  • Mixed Feelings

Firstly, optical quality is good, and occasionally outstanding. Chromatic Aberration is very well controlled, though seemingly blue rather than the more regular green/magenta. The problems are compatibility with the D7100 and a lower hit rate than any other lens I own. The on/off switch for the optical stabilization doesn't work on the D7100... OS is always on regardless of switch position. That creates a battery drain and some weirdness for previewing images (it might also cause problems on a tripod, where typically you would turn OS off, although its too early to say for me whether this is a real life problem). The focus ring is too close to the zoom ring, and unlike many lenses, its not forgiving if you accidentally cause resistance to the zoom ring while in auto-focus mode. Overall its a nice step up from a kit lens, but the issues are a bit of a downer for me.
