  • You get what you pay for!

This review is long over due, but here's the deal kids. Yes, this is a big price tag but once you use a lens of this caliber, you will be astounded! I purchased the Nikon 70-300mm with my current camera a couple years ago( kijiji find) and at the time, thought it was a good deal. Don't get me wrong, if you are a beginner it's an alright lens, but I found it too soft for what I wanted to achieve. I like wildlife photography and the images just weren't up to snuff. I also found it a slow lens. I bit the bullet, maxed out my line of credit and purchased this beauty of a lens! This lens is razor sharp! it surpassed my expectations and it's FAST at the F2.8. I have found for my wildlife shots, F4.0 is the sharpest. Another nice advantage of this lens is that you can add a teleconverter to it for extra reach if you need it. I won't lie, this can get heavy, and not being able to put a filter on the end of the lens to protect it can be nerve-wracking but if you have the lens hood on it's not that big of a deal. Basically, if you save your pennies( a whole lot of them) and buy this lens, you will not be disappointed!

I got a good price on this lens from Henry's, and good service. Even so my kids may not eat for a few months after I pay the credit card bill...but, you get what you pay for and this lens is something awesome. Open it up for amazing bokeh on portrait shots, or stop it down a bit for sports or wildlife photography. It's sharp sharp sharp and the autofocus is fast fast fast, even in low light. You just won't get the same results from a cheaper lens. With it I purchased a Nikon 1.7 tele-converter which yields an effective focal length of 510 mm, at the cost of a slight loss in sharpness. The combination performs flawlessly on the Nikon D600 (FX) body I have. In addition to being expensive this lens is heavy. It weighs 3 kg by itself; add the camera body and the tele converter and the package is 4+ kg, not something you'll want to shoot handheld for long. I bought a sturdy monopod which works really well. I have no regrets and highly recommend this lens to anyone with the financial resources to buy it.

  • Sports Shooter Must Have Lens

  • March 14, 2012
  • By: Domenico

Growing up as a kid I used to play a lot of sports. Every weekend in the summer I'd be on the diamond playing baseball, and in the winter I'd be on the ice playing hockey. Now that I'm a photographer and no longer a player, I still want the feeling of being in the game and part of the action. This lens gives you that incredible sensation. With it's fast focusing performance mixed with a pro level camera shooting 8-11 fps, this lens will allow you to capture detail you didn't think possible. Mixed with a 1.4x TC, you get an effective focal length of 420mm at f/4. The lens is extremely well built, and is possible to shoot with it handheld, but for extended periods of shooting, I would highly recommend a tripod, or a monopod at the very least.

Fantastic lens. My most used lens. Easy to hand-hold, and can be used with all 3 TC's. Great on either DX or FX bodies.
