I have had this lens for almost two months, and I look for every excuse to use it. The image stabilization alone is well worth the price over the non-L series version. The low-light capabilities are just amazing, even at smaller apertures. It is, by far, the sharpest lens I have tried to date. Not only is it an excellent macro lens, but the portrait work I have done with it has also been wonderful. This lens is definitely worth every penny!

After having a few years experience with the Nikon 105 D-type Micro on a D70s, I have high expectations from this lens with my 40D and so far it has not disappointed. With both infinity(IS = 4 stops acc. to Canon) and close focusing ranges(IS = 1 stop acc. to Canon)the lens allows for greater depth of field possibilities in low light which is a much appreciated improvement over it's non IS option, and you will notice the difference in low light shots where flash could be overkill, that a lot of Macro work is subject to.I'd definitely recommend this lens to anyone looking for a good macro lens who already owns, or plans to purchase a macro flash at a later date but wants to enjoy the good weather and little critters now! This will not work with any multiplier tubes, IE: 1.4X or 2X that Canon makes. It will however work with the EF14 II and the EF24 II extension tubes Canon offers.
Just got this lens, my previous macro was Tamron 90mm 2.8 This is by far the sharpest lens I have handled so far, great for macro and even film work IS works very well, Here is short test of IS in action, hand held. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CARvH4ntIQE If you are non pro on the budget get Tamron, if you are looking for absolutely the best, look no further.

I was comparing this lens to the non L-series model. I had a hard time to justify spending the extra money to get this lens when the non L-Series was less than half the cost. I spent an hour playing with the two lenses attached to my D40 in the store. At that point it was hard to decide - both great lenses. But this lens, the L-Series one, by far passed my expectations. The lens with Canon's new HIS system is well worth the buy. The clarity and sharpness is spectacular. After buying the lens and using it, I'm not regretting spending the extra money to buy this lens.
