This lens was my first "L" series lens. Originally, I was going to purchase the fixed 35mm focal length lens, but I thought I would get more use out of a zoom lens. I was NOT disappointed. I use this lens on my Canon 60D lens, which actually has a 1.6X crop factor (so the effective focal length is about 26mm to 56mm). Still it is a beautiful lens for architecture and landscapes. I can't wait to see how this lens will perform on a full frame camera such as the Canon 5D.
Focus is extremely fast, and very quiet. Contrast on this lens is exceptional, and the colours seem more vibrant than my other lenses.
The lens comes with a hood (at $1600+, it should) which is required for almost any outdoor shots with the sun. Speaking of the sun, this lens produces very nice star bursts when shooting into the sun, or bright lights.
A couple of cons - the filter size is 82mm, which results in very expensive filters. A circular polarizing filter for example, was $299.00. Even a UV filter will set you back about $150. The other con might be the weight of the lens, which is a bit heavy at 634 g., but I did not find the weight onerous.
