Pros: -Since this lens is part of the "L" Series collection, it is very well built, and feels solid. -light. holding a 5D in one hand and zooming with the other is no problem. -constant F4 aperture is nice. Shutter speed will remain the same from 24-105mm. -fantastic picture quality. Again if you have a 5D (or 1Ds), the image quality is amazing. Highly recommended for full frame cameras. -Image Stabilization (IS). A must for hand held shots. I regularly shoot a 1/4 second shutter speeds at 105mm. -weather, dust and moisture resistant. You can shoot in the rain with this lens. I've take shots at -15 during the winter with no problems. -very fast focus in good light. Cons: -very expensive compared to the Canon 28-135mm (but if you are buying this lens as part of kit with the Canon 5D Mark II, you get a huge discount). -105mm is a good length but it would be nice if Canon made the focal length was extended a bit (135 or 150mm), especially since this lens is almost 3 times the price of the 28-135mm! PS If you are trying to decide between this lens and the 24-70 f2.8 zoom, I recommend the 24-105mm. Unless you mostly shoot in low light, the extra 35mm of reach you get with the 24-105 is very handy. Plus it weighs a lot less and has IS!

I traded my L 28-80 zoom that I got with the 10D for this model last year and have loved its agility and quality. When all my kit was stolen in Barcelona in April, there was no question about getting the same lens again. It came this time in the kit with the 5D MkII and has the same build quality and sharpness as the original. I also use it as the standard lens for my web video program and find it excellent for HD video recording and to be bright enough even with modelling lights before firing up the studio lighting. Highly recommended

I got this lens with my 5D mkII when I bought it. This lens gives excellent quality shots and enlargements. Very high percentage of useable results. Zoom range is about as good as you are going to get for weddings/family events etc. Well built although I prefer zoom lenses that do not actually extend when zoomed. Anyway have had this lens for over a year and no issues. Great walk around lens and great combination with the 5DmkII....

I am an amateur photographer and I love this lens, especially for outdoor photography and indoors where there is good light. The 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is a versatile lens; great for outdoor portraits. The images are very sharp when hand held with excellent color, and tack sharp in the mid focal range when used on a tripod. The USM focusing ring is near silent, fast and accurate. The image stabilization allows for sharp images when shooting hand held. The F/4 aperture is fast enough for most daytime outdoor lighting environments. This lens is of high quality materials and construction. Feels great on the camera. Operation is smooth and precise, typical of Canon L class lenses. This is a great general purpose lens. This was an upgrade from the kit lens (18-55mm) and the difference is definitely noticeable right out of the box. The build quality is evident and the elements are flawless. In comparative night shots, the noise from the kit lens is gone and the overall clarity and crispness are impressive. The results I am getting are outstanding, crisp and distortion free from edge to edge. This lens is worth the money, every penny.

First, I wish I could give this lens 4 1/2 stars but the ratings won't allow it. The only reason being, since it's a zoom, it can't be perfect. No zoom really is though some are closer than others. This one is close and though some may be closer, it boasts a good range and of course IS. To me, IS is more important to help with hands that get tired from shooting over the course of a day as opposed to shooting at ridiculously slow speeds though I've been known to do it for static objects when needed. The image quality is good to great depending upon the focal length and aperture but again, we trade some things like this for those times when it's too hectic to change a lens. Though it's "only" an F4, low light isn't too much of an issue as modern cameras have gotten better at iso 3200,6400 and higher. It's not a lens that should stay on your camera all of the time, but you won't regret it being on much of the time.

  • Good Utility Lens

The Good: This lens has a great focal length that covers just about anything I typically shoot. The image stabilization is really nice to have as well. The aperture is a decent and constant f4 giving a good compromise between lens size and lens brightness. I don't mind shooting wide open at any focal length, and really think this lens does well beyond about 35mm. More than enough sharpness, contrast, and colour for most uses. The Bad: I find 24mm has some deal breaking issues with distortion and vignetting. I am starting to wonder if my lens isn't centered properly because I have hard vignetting in the corners and can't really correct distortion at the edge of the image. It's unfortunate because 24mm is one of my most used focal lengths. Auto correcting for distortion in lightroom actually adds distortion in areas, and I can't remove all of the vignetting unless I shoot at 35mm. I will have to have this issue looked at soon to either confirm that my lens needs service, or that I need to look at an alternative for shooting at 24mm.
