Product Reviews

  • *****
  • It's true, it is a lovely lens

  • January 12, 2012

The reviews of this lens all rated it highly so I was reasonably confident that this would be better than the lens that was bundled with my ancient E-500 (as it should be for that price). It is noticeably better even through the viewfinder. That's partly due to the larger basic aperture making the viewfinder brighter. Handling is very nice but focus is more critical as is avoiding camera shake because the lens is so crisp. The greater resolving power means it is easier to spot rejects using the camera's LCD display and deal with them in situ rather than waiting until editing time to find that the best shot is a fail. I find myself a lot more caring about sharpness which can only be good. One thing that surprised me was that the noise at ISO 1600 is less bothersome with the sharper lens. In Lightroom I just use colour de-noising and it leaves a nice fine grain. I rarely went so high on the ISO before but the extra speed of the lens makes low-light work more achievable from this old camera. I'm very pleased with this lens so far.
