DT 50mm F1.8 SAM is a compact, lightweight, high-quality lens with a 50mm focal length (35mm format camera equivalent: 75mm) that is ideal for portraits and general-purpose photography. It is designed exclusively for use with ? digital SLRs incorporating an APS-C type image sensor.
The photos from this lense are sharp and professional looking. I am a complete novice and have a Sony A55 slr which I love. I have been eyeing this lense for sometime and I am so happy to have it now. It produces sharp portraits with nice bokeh (blurred out background). Just to give you an idea, I was able to capture some beautiful photos of my 5 yr old by our Christmas tree with the lights sparkling but subdued and blurred in the back. No fancy flashes or settings. I know this isn't a very technical review, but if you are new to photography like me you will not regret purchasing this lense. I am fairly sure it is the most affordable lense that Sony offers. Very good value.

Zoom lenses have their use since they allow you to cover more range without changing your lens. However if you want to go that next step and have a more sharp and clear image then you need to buy this lens today!
There's always a question in the beginner's mind as to whether they should buy a prime lens or a zoom lens. The answer I've gotten from asking many people is both. And so I bought this lens. It is amazing. It produces extremely sharp images and produces a very fuzzy background inaccessible by zoom lens cameras. It has all the regular features found on Sony lenses (AF/MF switch, etc...). It might require manual zoom (ie: my legs!) BUT I think its a great camera to allow one to access their own capacities that they were unaware of. It teaches me (more everyday!) about lighting, direction, and expressing emotions in my photography. And I should know its a good teacher because I am one! =D
This lens is fantastic. it's fairly fast, and feels quite a bit more solid than the Canon equivalent of this. Isolates subjects well, with BEAUTIFUL Bokeh. the AF/MF switch is very convenient. Way more convenient than the on-body one, anyways.I use this lens almost exclusively now, for how beautiful the results are. This lens has taught me new ways to avoid using my 18-70mm and 75-300mm lenses. sometimes I HAVE to use my old lenses, but if there's a way I can use this instead, I will. Every sony user should invest in this as an introduction to gaping apertures. Next stop, f1.4!
